Stocked up on DIY Items!!

So, we don't have a good craft store here. My fiancee and I travelled this weekend for his away game (he coaches football) and I got to go to Michaels!! I stocked up on a lot of ribbon and got a paper punch I am going to use for our save the dates. Then last night I shopped on Hobby Lobby's website and got the styrofoam balls for my pomanders as well as the boxes for my card box and program box projects.

Is everyone else doing a lot of diy?

What diy project are you looking forward to the most?

Re: Stocked up on DIY Items!!

  • My FI and I have just started talking about this!

The only project I pretty much know for sure I'm going to be doing are these carnation pomanders. I thought about doing them with tissue paper like a lot of other knotties have done and it would be a lot cheaper, but I think I want them to look as much like real flowers as possible so I'm using silks.

When I showed the tutorial to my FI and explained how I was going to do everything he got so excited and said, "Yeah! And I can help!" It made me go awwwww inside :)

I think we also might make our own manzanita centerpieces that our florist will then add flowers to.

One of the best parts about having over a year before our wedding is all the time still left for DIY projects!

  • We're doing quite a bit with DIY or semi-DIY...The list is in my bio and pics of what is finished =)  I'm excited!  It is saving a lot!  But the biggest project are the invites.

We thought about tissue paper too, but I like the silks better. We are doing our's with silks. Must be something about pomanders, my fiancee had the same reaction. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /> They are kind of pricey to make, but we are cutting back on a ton of stuff, so I said this could be the one decoration we splurge on. Post pictures when you make yours!!

  • Carnations are not expensive..you should make them with real flowers...or are you using the fakes to get them done WAY before?

</div><div>Yeah, I looked into how far in advance you can make real ones and most people said no more than 24 hours and then you have to refrigerate them all hanging up (not laying down). I don't think they'll get done if I make them 24 hours before and I don't know where I would store them! </div><div>
</div><div>I'm going to ask my florist for a quote before I start the project though because that would be pretty foolish if she could make real ones for just a little bit more than I could make silk ones.</div><div>

  • You girls are all so crafty! The only DIY project that I know we're for sure doing is the box for the ceremony. FI loves woodworking so he's going to make the box for our bottle of wine, letters, and other little sentimental junk (haha i'm such a romantic). I'm looking forward to decorating that.

Meagan, the only thing to think about with this is you can sell silk ones after your wedding to another bride. You can't with real flowers. We are doing fake so I can sell them afterword and get some of the money back. Just a thought :)

  • Sydney, I checked out your planning blog, and we are pretty much planning all of the same DIY projects (not to mention we are date-twins)!

I just got some supplies from the Paper Source last night, and plan to get some more this week. I'm glad I'm not the only one starting on this stuff!

aww lol so cute!! my FI is excited about them too! IDK how much he will help though... he gets bored with that kind of stuff pretty easily!!
I'm going to do black, white and aqua ones for our pews and think i'm going to use silks too.... I'm not quite positive what kind of flower yet although i'm thinking either roses, gerbera daisies or hydrangea ( i have yet to find a website that makes black hydrangeas...)
I'm DIYing a lot of our stuff.... card box, i did the unity candle holder, serving set, planning on all of our stationary, my garter, our favors and much more.

I LOVE going to hobby lobby and buying materials ha ha it's the best thing in the world!! i'm just a crafty person i guess :)

good luck to all of you ladies on your projects!

How exciting! We can keep each other in check on how far along we should be with the DIY. I need to update my planning bio, I haven't done if for a few weeks. Thanks for the reminder.
