What time...

Should I start getting ready for a 5:30 ceremony?  We are not doing a first look, but I may want to have at least an hour before the ceremony to take pictures with my maid of honor and any other ladies that will be there with me.

Re: What time...

  • I have a 6pm ceremony, and originally allotted 2 hours. When talking to my photographers, they mentioned that 3+ would be better, especially if I want shots before the ceremony. They also recommend giving yourself a 30-minute window before the ceremony where nothing is planned/needed. This way, if you run a few minutes over on pictures, or need touch-ups, you aren't stressed, and can have a few moments just to breathe (or take that last nip of vodka, if you need it). ;)

  • You take the time you have to be ready and back up from there.  So if you have to be ready at 4:30, then I will give you my schedule as I had to be ready at 4:30 for our first look.

    2-4 Bride hair and makeup
    4:00 Bride gets dressed
    4:30 First look

I ended up wishing I had an extra 20 minutes as I felt a little rushed toward the end, so you may want to pad it by another half hour.  Generally, you need to allow a minimum of an hour and a half for hair and makeup and 30 minutes to dress and put on your jewelry, accessories and headpiece.  It took longer to fasten my dress and bracelet than I anticipated so I was a little rushed.
  • Here is what I'm doing for my 1:00 PM wedding (no first look)
9:00 AM Hair & makeup @ salon, expect to get done around 10ish depending on how other girls are doing.
10:30 AM - Meet at reception location & my parents will drive us back to their house (this way everyone's car is at reception location for end of night)
11:00 AM - Limo pick & drive girls to chruch
11:30 AM - Arrive at Church  & do any last make up touches & e at lunch (getting sandwich trays)
12:00 PM - Girls get into their dresses & then help me into my dress
12:20 PM - Photos w/girls and maybe parents & then relax breath
    1:00 PM - Wedding
  • Here was our timeline:

9-1:30: BM's hair and makeup at hotel
1:30-4: Hair and Makeup at the hotel (we took our time during the entire morning. it was nice to not be rushed)
4:00-4:15: Drive to venue, everyone dressed except me
4:15-4:45: Walk around venue, sip wine, touch up makeup, chill out
4:45-5:15: Put on dress and jewelry
    5:15 First Look
5:30-6:30 Bride and Groom pics, Wedding Party pics
6:30-7:00 Hang out upstairs with bridal party
    7:00 Ceremony

I kind of wish we had more time to take pictures, but we got some afterwards as well. We weren't rushed, I just didn't anticipate wanting so many pics! It was nice to have cushioning the entire day and be relaxed.
  • Thank you, this is very helpful! :)
  • And I definitely want some time to relax and breathe before hand!
  • That's quite a bit of time to allow for hair/makeup and all that.  I'm glad to see it!  I'm the kind of person who would need that much time because I HATE being rushed  :)  I'd have felt silly feeling the need to give myself so many hours in advance if I hadn't seen you other ladies doing the same thing.  Thanks for setting my mind at ease.  My wedding is at 1, limo is supposed to pick my FI and I up at 12:30 so I suppose it's not unreasonable to want to start my routine at 9.  Yay!
