Pay contracts in full before??

I was talking to a family member who got married a few years ago, and she asked if my vendors are all to be paid in full before the wedding day. All of mine are, and she said that that's not a good idea. She made sure that final payments for hers were not due until the day of. Most of my contracts have already been signed... was this a bad move? Does anyone know how that is supposed to work?

Re: Pay contracts in full before??

  • all of our payments need to be made 2-4 weeks in advance.

if something does not turn out as expected, your contact should protect you.  as long as you paid when they said to, if things fell short contractually on their end, you have a right to ask for a refund.

granted, it may be a headache or even include small claims, but i think you'll be fine.

  • Ours were due before or the day off the wedding.  Most of the ones that allowed you to pay the day off off required cash (you could pay by check if you sent it in 2 weeks before the wedding - meaning they could make sure the check did not bounce).

There are a lot of things you have to pay in advance. Concert tickets, airplane tickets, cruises and pretty much 100% of the things you buy online come to mind. I do not think paying in advance for wedding related stuff is a big deal.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I think it's pretty common to have the final payments before the event.

The only exception that I've seen is the photographer, half when booked, half on delivery of finished product.

The band had to be paid in full on booking, no exceptions.  They were very much in demand and that was their policy
