Drunk Toddler

http://www.9news.com/news/sidetracks/192875/337/Tot-served-booze-at-restaurant-?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|t

CN:  Family was having dinner at Applebee's.  Parents ordered apple juice for their 15-month-old.  Toddler was served a margarita instead.

Seriously, though, is it THAT hard to distinguish margarita mix from apple juice?

    Wow.

I've never worked at a restaurant that had margaritas. Is the alcohol already IN the mix?
  • Options

Apparently it was in this case.  The doctors said if the kid had finished the drink he could have died.

I didn't even know of any restaurants that carry pre-mix margaritas.  Usually (as far as I've worked with/seen) The margarita mix isn't alcoholic.  It's literally the "mixers" to the alcohol.

huh.  Learn something new every day.
  • Options
Um if the drink had enough tequila in it for it to actually resemble apple juice wouldn't they have SMELLED the alcohol?

Isnt that story super old?  I vaguely remember hearing something like this years ago, but it may have involved whiskey.

    Ya, I read that.

But most of the time, mixes and alcohol are kept differently. This just seems weird and irresponsible to me.

Come to think of it, it was a Fridays and def whiskey.

I am thinking the parents might not have noticed if it was in one of those kids cups with the lids on it which aren't always see thru.  Trying to give the parents the benefit of the doubt here.

I'm thinking it was a sippy cup...which is why I'm less inclined to judge the parents.  I'm thinking the bartender should have known the difference, though.

Unless, of course, the kid keeps a flask in his diaper.  Darn toddlers trying to spike their apple juice at restaurants....

When it happened at the Fridays I was talking about, it wasnt the bartenders fault.  There was an apple juice in a glass and then a shot of whiskey.  The waiter poured the shot into the sippy cup.

Im pretty sure bartenders are not allowed to mix drinks in sippy cups.  Especially at a chain restaurant.

They sell all kinds of premade mixers :(

This is sad. I would be pissed. On the other hand I always check food and drinks before they eat/drink.

Although i'm pretty sure Applebees would not be using marketed drink mixes that were created to make a drink taste like the bartender at TGIFridays mixed the drink  ;)

What, you never ask for a margarita in a sippy cup when you eat at Applebees? :)

I agree, though.  If you're filling a sippy cup with margarita mix, wouldn't you have an inkling that something's wrong?

I've heard of it happening with an LIT before.  For some reason I think the server did it on purpose then.

When I bartended we used these for juices, but ours were more translucent than white

We had Margarita Mondays where they were $1.95.  We would premix the margaritas in these containers or in an extra tea urn.  Some of these containers were used for juice, too.
RULE: When these containers had alcohol in them you had to put XXX on them with a black marker.

When I first read this story, my assumption was a different bartender did something like we did and didn't label it. ?? It was just the first thing that came to mind, because I was always scared that would happen.

Really?  Some guy was expecting a margarita in a sippy cup?

I just looked at the Applebee's website and they have an apple margarita ("Red Apple 'Rita:The Neighborhood's own sweet apple margarita. It's a mix of Sauza Gold tequila, DeKuyper Luscious Red Apple liqueur and margarita mix served over ice.") Makes me wonder if the bartender accidentally gave the red apple liquor instead of apple juice. Still a pretty bad mistake.

    anna.oskar...Maybe he was lol
