[QUOTE]My friend named her baby Bee. I knew it was going to be a little unusual, so I offered up "oh, short for Beyonce?" No. Nonononono. Bee. Short for Bandana. Beautiful. Your beautiful baby girl is NOT going to get picked on AT ALL. Moron. I've always loved Luke for a boy. If FI agrees to that [if we ever even have kids] then he can name the girl. Never really had any girl names I love.

umm, seriously.  who the f names their kid Bandana???  Is your friend joking?  Gotta agree with her getting picked on.  When will people realize these are children, not OBJECTS????  Crap like that frustrates me to no end.  Hey, I am gonna name my kid aluminum foil, but call him al for short. . . that's the level we get to with these names.  Ugh, just kills me!

If you have two daughters, I'd recommend "Cinnamon" as the name for daughter #2. We had a waitress at a Denny's named Cinnamon once. While "waitress at Denny's" seems like an appropriate career for a woman named Cinnamon, stripper would be even better!<div>
</div><div>ETA: If you spell it "Sinnamon" you will not only go with the current trend of unique spellings, you will also surely direct her into stripping because of her "sin"ful name!</div>

  • I'm a lurker, just popping into this thread! One of my friends told me she wants to name her daughter "Cameron", which I think is a cute name... But she wants to spell it Kamryn. That poor kid will have to spell out her name a million times.

    "No, it's Kamryn with a K. And a y."

I can't deal with all of these strange ways of spelling names. My name can be spelled like 60 different ways and it drives me crazy when I get a card from someone and it's spelled "Meaghyn" or something ridiculous.

  • I think it's amusing that the 'normal' and 'traditional' names are now the ones that are unique.  Although, there are quite a few traditional names making a comeback, which is kind of disappointing.  I really liked the name Ella for a girl, it was my grandmother's name and something I'd always thought I could name my future daughter, but alas, it's now gaining popularity, and sounds way too much like Bella, and there's no way in hell that I want my daughter to have to deal with that one...

  • I teach, so I hear RIDICULOUS names... Seriously, I don't even know how to pronounce some of them! I always feel pretty bad on the first day!

For example: LaQuise, Fadajea, Theophilus, Justinjammall (yes it's all one word & he has TWO middle names!), Akia... I could go on & on & on... These are just students I have had this year.

FI have our favorites right now: Catherine Bryce for a girl & Archer (?) for a boy!  I've always been a HUGE fan of Mary Virginia, too!

  • I'm with PPs- I hate all the male -aden names, and I also hate Carly, Kaylee etc. Especially Carly.  It's funny you mention the senator rule-I always do the 'grandma rule' in my head (okay, and out loud-DH thinks I'm nuts!).
I tend to like more traditional names as well.  I have always wanted to name my daughter Emma Caroline after my grandma, but Emma is #1 on the most popular baby names list. I don't want my future kids to be Emma W or whatever their whole lives. And I've always loved the name James for a boy, but DH is named James and goes by Jimi, and I think it would be weird for the kid to have the formal name while the dad gets the nickname...
  • My FI has a nickname as a first name (Danny), when I told my mom she asked what his mother was thinking, then I told her he is a Jr., so it was really his grandmother who originally came up with it, but FILs didn't have to make him a Jr., they could have given him another name. I do think it makes our wedding invites look a little less formal but I would never mention that to him.

My brother has a friend hamed Harvey, when we asked what it was short for he said "Harvest Moon." True story. I guess his parents were hippies.

  • I work in health care and I'm constantly looking up names on the computer.  I don't want my kids to have to spell their names for the rest of their lives.  I hate names that are spelled more than one way, and I hate it even more when you take a normal name with a standard spelling and make it weird.  No "Y"s and no Jrs or the 3rds either.  Nothing can cause a problem with records more than a same name for 2 different family members.

I love the name Lauren for a girl, and since it was popular when I was a kid, I don't think it will be by the time I have a baby.

I love the senator or grandmother test.  I can't imagine talking about Grandma Bubbles.

[QUOTE]You know what else makes me nuts about naming children?  When the parents give all the kids names that are related in some way.  Like naming all their daughters Rose, Violet, Daisy, Poppy and Iris.  Or Rosemary and Sage.  Or Ruby, Pearl, Jade and Opal.  Or giving them all names that start with the same letter (like the Duggars).

That's how the local animal shelter names litters of kittens and puppies to help them remember who is in the same litter. Ex. my cat was Ruby and her siblings were Onyx, Jade, etc.<div>

  • As someone with a funky spelling of a traditional name, I always caution friends about making their child's name "unique".  Let the child be unique on their own and leave the spelling of the name alone.  I don't know how many documents I have with various spellings of my first name.

My most hated trend is Charlie (or Charlee, Charleigh, Charley etc.) for girls. I dislike boys names for girls in general but I can't stand this. I semi accept it for a nickname of Charlotte.

Other than boys names for girls I dislike random surnames (i.e. no relation to you), made up names, misspelled names, and trendy names.

My FI doesn't know it yet but when we start trying for kids I'm going to make him sit down with the name nerds website list of names which groups names by spelling to determine popularity. I prefer names that are on the classic side with a bit of history or I feel a personal connection to.

  • My name pet-peeve is when people name their kids the shortened version of a name, not the full version.  For example, naming your son Alex, not Alexander, just Alex, or just Kate instead of Katherine.  It depends on the name though, plus, I'm super biased.  I have a shortened version of a name, and I much prefer the full version....but my parents didn't give me that choice.

Thank you ladies for acknowledging this growing epidemic.  My friend and I have been talking about the "Kayla Kaylee Taylor Bailey Connor Jayden Brayden Gavin Hunter Logan McKenzie Emma Bella Madison Maddysen Madysyn" problem for years.  I cringe now every time someone tells me what they named their baby.  I couldn't be a teacher today.  I weep for the future.

  • I had rules when I picked out my kids names.  Nothing on the top 10 list from the year before, the "Senator" test (not what I thought at the time, but great explanation), no weird spellings.

I did cave to my ex's demand on how to spell Jonathan (traditional) and how he wanted it..Johnathan.  That was a pain when going to appointments, Name..."Johnathan....that's J.O.H.N..."   Oh and he goes by his middle name too...Alex.  I did not repeat that mistake with the other two kiddos.

Also, future parents need to be aware of the initials and potential nicknames of their kids.  My older brother had the name David Anthony.  Awesome name unless your last name starts with an "M".   One of my students wants to give their some-day-future-child a name so the initials work out to be OMG, WTF, LOL.  Thinks it will be "cute if I can figure it out"

Then there was the lady I worked with while in high school.  Her last name was Head and she wanted to name her future son "Richard"  Really!?

I have a 'unique' spelling for my name, which is unfortunatly extremely uncommon. When I'm married my first and last name will start with the same letters, I have a 'boys' middle name, but spelt the girly way.... my parents suck....

on top of that I'm marrying an '_ayden'

I have an friend who is naming her son 'Jackson' spelt Jaxzyn......

it's sad that I feel bad for him.

FI loves four-letter, two syllable names.  I think we love Ava and Ellie most for a girl, but I, too, question Ellie in the long term.  I think the boy's name we both like right now is Owen but again...I think of an adult Owen as Owen WIlson and that's not a pleasant thought!  Good thing we're not pregnant!!
