Stealing or Not?

So - FI, Abuela and I went to a barbecue place today for lunch.

We sat at a table that had moist towellettes in a dispenser - as well as the usual - sweet 'n low, sugar, salt, etc in packets.

FI and Abuela were stuffing items into her purse - particularly the moist towelettes - so FI could take them for lunch. But also the sweet 'n low packets and salt packets as well. I felt this was wrong and a form of stealing.  That they expect each person to use the amount of the products necessary for the meal - not take entire stacks of them. FI and Abuela said they are free..and it's not stealing.

I felt VERY uncomfortable - particularly because abuela continued slipping things into her purse throughout the meal. I mean  why not take the entire ketchup bottle??

FI asked why I was turning so red throughout the meal - but I didn't want to sell his grandma out and tattle and be like "omgz, she keeps stuffing stuff into her purse!"
as she was sneakily sliding them into her purse.

Lol. I'm mostly just sharing a funny story cuz I'm bored :p but I felt REALLY awkward the entire time.

Why do old people (and my FI) do that? My grandma used to do that stuff - until I asked her very politely to stop while I was with her.

  • LOL I would have and tattled on her and whispered  "Payback's a bitch huh?" in her ear.. LOl..
But yes I agree with you, it is stealing.  It's "free" but it's meant to be used with your drinks or meals while YOUR THERE. Not while your at work, home, out for a picnic, etc...
When you go out and you look at the menu and you wonder why your favorites places dishes just went up by .50 cents or $1, blame the people whole steal handfuls of the condiments and dishes.  Someone has to pay for that.

  • Hahaha I definitely think its stealing. One of the a local gas stations put their French vanilla creamers in dispensers because people was too many of the individual packs.
  • Oh boy. I'd feel awkward too! My great grandmother would steal silvewares from every restaurant she went to.

I'll admit I have done it too. I stole a nice bread knife from a restaurant when I was a teenager just because I didn't like ours at home! I like to take lots of napkins and store it in my car too (mostly from gas stations). I spill everything in my car!

There is one amazing buffet place that I've always talked about bringing in a huge purse with a huge ziplock bag to stuff all their food in it. They don't allow doggy bags. I've never done that though!

  • I would feel pretty uncomfortable about stealing tons of them.  I sometimes will take extra napkins and throw them in my car from dunkin donuts or something.  I sometimes take the little dishes that sauces come in but I usually ask for one to go and they usually don't give me a to go container for the side salad dressing or sauce.

  • I think its stealing. I would have felt uncomfortable too! Just Bc its out to use tor free doesn't mean take /use it all. If that was the case then it would be ok to take tester bottles of perfume lotion. Same principle I'm sure none of us would be ok with that.

Yeah - and I think napkins are a bit different - because you never know - you may really need 5 or 6 for the drive-thru/fast food meal..but...an entire stack of sweet n low when we didn't even order coffee??

    Lol :p

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with taking an extra one or two beyond what you're using, but anything more than that (ie stacks) is wrong...

But one thing I've realized is typically older people are set in their ways... tht is, you're unlikely to stop abuela from stealing them. So I'd look the other way and if you need to, leave an extra dollar or two in tips to "cover" it.
