Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

What's on your "Must Play" list for the reception?

FI and I just started thinking of fun songs that we'll want to hear at the reception.  Are you guys having a must play list?  If so, whats on it?

Without going into specifics (because we have such a long time):

Some "swing songs" from the 1940's for the older folks (maybe 2-3)

Definitely Motown, because we are in the Detroit area and grew up with it

"Old Time Rock & Roll" by Bob Seger, because it's just one of those songs you have to dance to.

Some rock (Rolling Stones) some Beatles, beyond that we haven't picked much.

My playlist is currently VERY long. It definitely needs some trimming. But some of my absolute favorites from it are:

Always Where I Want to Be - The Kooks
The Way I Am - Ingrid Michaelson
    I Know - Meaghan Smith
Be Be Your Love - Rachael Yamagata
    Us - Regina Spektor
Swing Life Away - Rise Against
The Suffering - Coheed and Cambria
    Everlong - Foo Fighters
    Sweetness - Jimmy Eat World
Fell In Love With A Girl - White Stripes
    Marry Me - Dramarama
    I'm Yours - Billie Holiday
For Once In My Life - Harry Connick Jr.
I'll Never Stop Loving You - Doris Day
    No One - Alicia Keys

Literally, this is about 1/10 of what I we've jotted down so far. At this point we are just throwing our ideas together and we will edit it later. But these are some that are definitely staying.

As far as dance music goes, I actually found my DJ at a friend's recent wedding, and he totally felt the crowd's vibe and kept the party going. I was dancing all night! So I think I will just let him do his thing for that portion.

My sister just had her wedding and we found this really great website to help choose songs to play at the wedding. It's called SongVote.com and it actually allows the guests to vote on songs they would like to hear at the wedding and then when the 'contest' is over, it creates a playlist for you. It's a really good idea and helped out a lot! I definately suggest using it for yours, or even to help you find a specific song.

"Yeah" by Usher.  When my sister and I were in Barcelona and went clubbing with our entire hostel, this was the first "American" song we heard (after about 2 hours of thumping, Spanish club music), and we all went NUTS!  And "Oh What a Night" by The Four Seasons - my BMs and I used to go to a club in high school where they had a special line dance to this song.  It's now a tradition at all of our weddings to play the song and do the line dance.

Our wedding has taken on a Key West vibe, so our play list includes A LOT of Jimmy Buffett. We are also giving guests the opportunity to request songs through our wedding website so we'll see what they come up with (so far it's more lovey-dovey than I had expected "That's Amore," "Only Wanna be with You," etc.)! :)

Shake It - Michael Franti (new one - also love)

For the last song of the night, i am so tired of all the same old same old, so I am going with a song i have always loved that will send people out on a high note, "so long farewell goodbye" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.  Its a great upbeat song that (hopefully) will get people to dance the last dance, but also realize the party is ending :-)

I kind of just have some highlights picked out but otherwise I know my DJ will do a good job.  What I really want played are both our parents' wedding songs becuase both sets got married a month apart 30 years ago and are still together!  My parents' was "And I Love Her" by the Beatles and my fiance's was an old 60's feel song.  Then I'd like to play the songs that two of our friends are getting married to this year.

Lastly, we're going out with Say Hey (I Love You)!  How can that not put a smile on your face?

OK, so I've had a playlist titled "Wedding Reception (his last name) Style" on my iTunes for years, and I've adjusted it as needed to include favorite songs and meaningful ones alike. Yes, my Fi knows about it, lol, and he's cool because we both crave GOOD tunes for parties and such.
    Highlights Include:
-Baby, Hold Onto Me (Eddie Money)
    -Smooth (Rob Thomas/Santana)
-The Way I Are (Timbaland ft. Keri Hilson)
    -My Love (Justic Timberlake)
-Telephone (Lady Gaga; doing a choreographerd bridesmaid dance with this one)
-Blame It (Jamie Foxx ft. T-Pain- we're getting someone to wear the panda suit!)
    -Umbrella (Rhianna ft. Jay-Z)
    -Yeah (Usher, etc)
-Bye Bye Bye (NSYNC- some of my bridesmaids and I saw them in concert 4xs...)
    -Barbie Girl (Aqua)
    -What Is Love (Haddaway)
-Walk Like an Egyptian (The Bangles)
    -Get Into the Groove (Madonna)
-Billy Jean, Thriller, Don't Stop Til Ya Get Enough, Blame it On the Boogie (MJ)
    -White Wedding (Billy Idol)
    -Uptown Girl (Billy Joel)
    -Shout It Out Loud (KISS)
    -Canned Heat (Jamiroquai)
    -Dancing Queen (ABBA)
-That Thing You Do! (The Wonders/from the movie, "That Thing You Do!")
    -Shout! (Isley Bros.)
    -I Get Around (Beach Boys)
    -Dirty Boogie (Brian Setzer)
...more swing, more 80s, etc, YMCA, Electric & Cha-Cha Slide. We're planning to take the playlist up through the decades as much as possible from jazz during dinner to swing and on into today's most current music. This will prevent the elderly guests who bow out early from hearing too much rap!
Some "slow songs" are Hey Soul Sister (Train), Name (Goo Goo Dolls), and Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Israel Kamikawiwa'ole).

We're hoping to really motivate our guests to dance with us!
Sorry for the "rant"- I really liked this subject! Have fun with your lists, ladies!
