tips

How would one tip at a wedding they are hosting when tip is included in the price? Our reception will run us about $15000, but that was including taxes and tip. Would we still be expected to tip the waiters, and other staff members at the reception site, even though it is included. The same issue applies to our limo driver, photographer and photo booth attendant? I don't want to be rude and not tip, but also I don't want to waste money when the tip is already included. have others had the same problem, and what would everyone recommend doing?

Re: tips

  • If the tip is already included there's no need to tip again.  The only person we tipped at our wedding was our JOP.  The best man had the money in an envelope we gave him that had her name on it.  After the ceremony was over we thanked her and he gave her the envelope.  Oh, and we tipped the flower delivery guy.  When he dropped the flowers off at our house (bouquets, bouts, etc) I just opened my wallet and handed him a tip.
  • If it's included, I wouldn't.

  • If you think they have gone above and beyond, then you can give an additional tip.  Our caterer included an 18% tip, but they did such a good job that we wanted to tip a little bit more.  We actually did this over the phone a few days after the wedding.

But if you think the service was on-par with the tip you've already paid, then there's no need to do additional tips.  I think most vendors just add it in now so that you don't have to worry about having cash at the wedding or sending a tip in afterwards (and so that they still GET a tip if you completely forget).

Whether you tip more or not, I highly recommend you call, email, or send a card to each of your vendors thanking them for their service, especially if you think they did a good job.  A lot of wedding vendors get business through word-of-mouth, recommendations, testimonials on their website, and postitive internet reviews.

Only add to a tip that's already included if the person just absolutely knocked your socks off.

ETA: If they've already been tipped, then the best way to reward superior service is a recommendation.
  • Ditto what everyone here has said- however, make sure that the "taxes and tip" you mention is actually (or partially) a tip that is distributed to the workers if you do want the staff to be tipped for thier work.  Many vendors/ places use that terminology but in actuality it's not a tip for the staff but a "fee" that covers admin costs and such.  So I would confirm this with your vendor to make sure you have the whole story before you decide what you're going to do! Hope that helps!

    Good luck!
