push up bra or not?

I have a large chest (size 34DD).  I went to Victoria Secret to purchase a strapless bra for my wedding dress.  Being a DD, I don't wear to many strapless things.  So my experience in this department is very limited.  The sales person suggested that I buy a straplesss push up bra.  I was shocked!  I have never owned a push up bra...never even considered the idea.  Why would I want to look bigger? The sales woman just said it changes the shape of your chest.  I would have been more than willing to try one on, but Victoria Secret doesn't care them in stores.  They need to be ordered online.

Do you have any thoughts?  Is this worth persuing or just stick with a normal strapless bra?

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Re: push up bra or not?

  • Personally, I wouldn't even buy a bra. Is it possible to have bra cups sewn into your dress?

I am a 34D and had cups and underwires sewn in, and it worked fabulously. It's so much easier and more comfortable than dealing with an additional undergarment the day of your wedding.

  • I was under the impression that boobies were a good thing, no?

  • I'm definitely getting a pushup bra.  My dress is not strapless and the cut of the dress looks much better with bigger boobs!
  • I'm a standard size (36C) but don't feel like boobs are "too much."

Have you looked into  a long line bra? It would be more supportive than a strapless and you wouldn't have to tug it back up all day.

  • Depending on your dress, you may not need a bra. I'm a 38DD and since my dress is a corset, the girls are held in place nice and firmly.

Otherwise, I echo PP about a long line bra. I got mine from www.mpassion.com which has a diverse range of sizes. I bought it before I found my dress, though, otherwise I wouldn't probably have one.
  • Im a C and my dress is so fitted I cant fit a bra in my dress-- I wouldn't worry about it, one less thing to buy and deal with on your wedding day

  • i'm a 32 c and i got a long line push up bra... i like it because it shapes my tummy so theres no belly button or anything and it holds the bra up so i don't feel like it's falling or like i need to fix it! my dress has support built into it but i like the added support of the longline bra!
  • I am a 36G and my dress shop is going to fit my dress too me so I don't have to wear one (a dream not having to wear one) so I would speak to the dress shop and see what they recommend. I also know my shop sells bra's that go nice under dresses incase I end up having to have one.
  • I am a DD as well and would no way consider not wearing a bra, but that is just me.  But, I know many people with corset dresses have and love it.  You have to figure out what you are most comfortable with.  I purchased a longline, strapless bra from HerRoom.  They have a great selection and lots of reviews.  I haven't tried it with my dress, but I think it will work great.

  • Is it possible for you to order it and return it if you don't like it?  I would take different bras to the fitting and then decide based on the look you like.  Also talk to them about whether it's possible to build in cups or whatever so you don't need a bra.  I always think it's better to make a decision when you can see all of the options.
  • fargets i'm in the same boat, the sales girl pushed a padded strapless on me and when I tried it on I looked like I had huge fake porn star breasts. I would not recommend, unless your going for that look then by all means more power to ya. Smile
  • That is the exact thing  I'm afraid of!  I don't want to do the porn star look on the wedding day.  I ordered a longline bra and a regular strapless bra.  Hopefully one of them will work out.

Thanks so much for the help,

  • Fargets- I am the exact same size as you, so I feel your pain. They are annoying when you are trying to go for a modest look. I wouldn't go with a push up if it were me.

Usually dresses that are fitted properly will have enough support. Good luck!

My experience in VS strapless bras is that they can often be converted to non-push up. Basically, they have these little gel or foam inserts that you stick in a pocket inside the bra that marginally increases your bust size and gives a little boost from the bottom. I'm 34D, YMMV. Personally, i'd go with sewing the cups into the dress if possible, as PPs have suggested. The main problem with strapless bras once you get to a C cup and up is that the structural engineering required to lend support and keep in place strapless bras is a nightmare. Do you plan on hugging anyone the day of? Perhaps dancing close with your new husband? Because I swear, one of you will end up with bruises. The cups are so sturdy on those things they'd stop bullets.
