Sending invities/RSVP date

Hi all! We are getting married in Myrtle Beach, SC (we're from Pittsburgh, PA) on 5/27/12 and can't figure out when to send our invitations. All of our vendors are requiring final counts 3 weeks before the date, so when would be appropriate to ask for RSVPs?

Thank you! :)

ETA: Also, our guests will each have to figure out flight/hotel arrangements. We listed options on our website, but there wasn't an option for blocking rooms or packages there. We are also getting married Memorial Day weekend which is a huge tourist weekend there.

Re: Sending invities/RSVP date

  • Hi there... you'll hear a ton of different opinions on this.  Some will tell you it's the exact same etiquette as a regular wedding, and some will tell you that it's ok to request them sooner since it's a DW.

I sent out STD's about 7 months out.

My wedding date is 4-20 and I plan to send the invites out shortly after the 1st of the year, and my RSVP date is 3-1.

    Hope that helps! :)

  • I think for destination weddings it can vary a great deal.  For me personally I sent STD's out a year in advanced. For my invitations I am sending them out the end of January with an RSVP date of March 1.  My wedding is in Jamaica on June 15 so this is pretty early, but I have a group contract and need to know if I need to drop rooms that I have already put a deposit on by march 10th so I am hoping to get a good amount to book by then with the rest trickling in later.

  • I'd ask for them 4 weeks prior.  That way you have a week to hunt done from those you haven't heard from, yet before you need to have you numbers in.
  • Thank you both! We are thinking of sending them out in the beginning of March and then asking for RSVPs by the end of April. We sent out STDs already, but because we can't block rooms we have no idea who is actually coming/made reservations already.

My vendor wants a head count 2 weeks prior.
RSVP date will be 2 weeks prior to vendor date.
Invitations will go out maybe 3 months from RSVP date.

I originally had thought people didnt get hotels, flights, etc until they got their invitation, but evidentally it's normal to book everything prior to getting an actual invitation, just the STD.
  • We sent STDs at 6 months, invitations at 2 months, RSVP at 1 month, which was one week before vendor counts due. We didn't have an overly exotic destination, no passport requirements, nor were accommodations rare. Our friends are pretty seasoned travelers and most didn't book flights or hotel until 4-6 weeks before the wedding anyway due to work uncertainties. An earlier RSVP would have been highly inaccurate for us.
