How did you make your map?

For those of you who included an insert with a map, how did you make your map?

I've found a website that shows you how to do it off of a map you have to make but they estimate that it will take 6+ hours for you to do it.

Re: How did you make your map?

  • It took me at LEAST 6 hours.  I followed the directions on WeddingMapper.com, but it turned out fuzzy, so I redid it in photoshop with a high resolution.  Ultimately, I'm happy with it, and I'm happy I did it myself and saved the $150 it would have cost me to get somebody else to do it, but if you don't have photoshop, I'd pay the money to somebody else.  I really, really would.

  • I did mine in Powerpoint and I loved the way they turned out.

I mapped my wedding location in Mapquest and created a screen print of the image.  Pasted the screen print into a Powerpoint slide and resized it to fit the slide.  Then I used Microsoft draw to trace over all of the roads that I wanted and used call outs, text boxes, clip art and our monogram to spruce up the page.  I didn't find it to be that difficult but it did take a little bit of time.
  • I just did mine last night.  After a bit of work, I also went the Powerpoint Route.  I downloaded Jing to do the screen capture, and placed the image in.  Then I just traced the major lines, putting in markers for all of the wedding sites.  It took me about an hour-hour and a half once I figured out which program to use.  Don't be afraid!
  • Thank you ladies so much!

I'm still not sure which one to use. I like the way that Squirrly's looks but I'm really not sure I have the photoshop skills to touch it up and make it look nice. If I get a chance today I may have to give it a shot and see how hard it is.

I'll post pictures if I get a chance.
  • It's worth noting that one of the difficulties for me is that my roads are not on straight lines.  They're round and curvey and sort of all over the place - which makes putting the road names in very challenging.  We also have guests coming from all directions, so leaving out more roads isn't really an option.

If you have a very simple map, it can be done pretty easily.  If it's more complex. . .

  • I also took a screen-shot of a google earth map and then drew lines on top of it to make the map. This worked really well. We also had curvy roads - which wasn't a problem since many programs do allow you to make curves. I used microsoft publisher but I'm quite sure you could do this in power point as well. It does take time and patience but our result turned out great!
