Good morning, non-Americans!

And expats, and people who for whatever reason are not stuffing their faces with Thanksgiving food today. What's up?

I am in a good mood because it's essentially my Friday - tomorrow is office Olympics! The best day of the year! And possibly because I went to a really cool wine tasting event last night (which I got invited to through my blog, so nerdiness pays off).

A hotel bar just launched its wine dispenser, which is a machine that lets them have 24 bottles of wine open but preserved so they don't go bad. You buy a prepaid card, stick it in the little slot and can choose a taste, a half-glass or a glass of any of these wines, each with their different prices and descriptions right there which makes it easy to do your own little tasting. A taste is from US$0.60 to $1.40, and it's great for someone like me who's just getting into wine. Definitely planning my next happy hour there.

Re: Good morning, non-Americans!

  • morning to you or good affie now, i am a bit disappointed i don't get to enjoy the hoopala of TG but hey ho; i got fish & chips!

The wine dispenser sound very cool, i am a big wine fan; i like rioja the best, i don't drink too much wine but chardonnay is very nice; i've learnt recently that cheap doesn't necessesarily mean bad but to remember, it some times does!

Its freezing here, but no snow yet, it doesn't stick anyway because of the sea air but people do go a bit crazy and everything shuts down! Have you got warm weather, what type of climate do you get in winter (excuse my geographical ignorance i keep thinking it must be hot all year round in Chile!)
  • Don't worry. My dad's wife had come to visit twice in summer and thought we had tropical weather - NO! Chile's far south, so it's a Mediterranean climate that's pretty similar to California (where I'm from). Summer highs are 20s/occasionally low 30s C, winter lows are usually single digits warming up to the teens during the day. Winter isn't cold in terms of degrees, but it feels cold because it's damp, and most places don't have central heating. Even friends who're from Canada and have experienced -30 say winter in Chile is worse! Right now though of course we're headed into summer, and today it's supposed to be 29.

Chilean wines have probably the best price/quality ratio right now, and I know in mainland UK supermarkets there's a lot of it - not sure what your selections are like. I've never had rioja though since coming from California and now being in Chile the new world wines are much more common.
  • I'm here, but I think I'm going back to bed.  I had to get up and feed the dog.  Must rest up and combat turkey coma later.
  • I'm so confused. I mean, I'm 'Murrican, but I'm up. But this post isn't addressed to me, so I'm not sure what to do.

SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT TO DO.

Scott's already been at work for and hour and a half so he can make it home by 11 to start the thanksgiving festivities.

For the record, it's NEGATIVE 30 degrees here today with the wild chill. Pretty awesome.

  • Fish, CALM DOWN. You're practically Canadian, so you can be here.

Sucks that Scott had to work today, but I'm glad you get to do the T-day thing soon! I still do not understand temperatures that cold.

Loopy, you definitely need your rest in order to best tackle the feast this afternoon :)
  • I'm the official unoffical Canadian Ambassador.

And yeah, in weather like this the rental car business gets a little out of hand.

And...imagine walking outside and getting hit in the face with about 2 thousand needles at the same time. That's kind of how it feels.

  • We are having one hell of a snow storm right now, and my butt actually went out and walked the dog.  I even rode my bike there!!  In 3 inches of snow!! But I won't do that ever again.  It sucked. I'm now waiting for my pizza to be finished so I can nom on that.
  • Good morning! I'm American but I'll post her if I want to, damnit!

I just woke up and I'm about to go jump on FI(Mom makes us sleep in different beds when we visit until we're married, I thought we were adults? Hmm). Then it'll be time to go to my uncles for a lovely dysfunctional Thanksgiving.

I hope everyone is having a good morning!
  • OH my god.  Happiness.  I found the parade streaming online.  YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY!!  It's making me teary.
  • I'm back...

Aleigh - my parents made us sleep in separate beds until we were married at their house too.  It ticked H off.
  • emily, there is a really good selection of Chillean wine in the supermarkets here, i'll have to try a selection!
Snippy; is it pitch black really early now in Sweden? when i go for work i'm always shocked how little light there is in winter!
  • Loopy, you didn't sleep for very long.

And it's more my step-dad than it is my mom which makes it even worse. We'll be moving back next month anyway so I'm just going to tough it out.
  • If you have some time, give this a watch. It's totally worth the 14 minutes. I promise.

  • Aleigh - I didn't really sleep at all.  Just went and cuddled with H and caught up with him.  I haven't seen him in a few days cause of work schedules.

Yeah, the sun is down here by around 4 or 4:30.  So, ya know, half an hour from now.
  • Good morning.

I'm jealous of all the turkey being consumed.  And of Black friday.  I wish Canada had black friday.  BOOO.

It reaches a point where when it's this cold out, there needs to be snow on the ground.  I don't like ice and frozen ground without snow.  Bring it on.

Although last year we got 4' one night overnight.  There was nothing when we went to bed and by 5am the town (and region) was declared in a state of emergency.  I didn't even know that you could get snow days as an adult with a career.  Apparently you can.  Another one of those would be handy please.

  • Hey bitches!  I wish I was nomming on taters and stuffing today.  Hold the turkey though.

Today it's only -2C.  Woot!!!  I feel so spoiled.  It's been a miserable 6 days or so.

  • Good morning everyone!  I need to do a little cleaning and then we're off to my mom's house in a few hours.  Our weather hasn't been that bad yet this year, but I'm sure it's coming.

  • I envy you all your Thanksgiving celebrations, but I don't envy the cold.
  • I am so over winter you guys.  So over it.  We're on a 5 year plan.  In 5 years we're going to get the hell out of dodge, provided we can both find jobs that we love.

  • Good morning.  I slept like garbage, and now that I've decided last minute to actually spend Thanksgiving with people, I feel like crap.  I need to start scouring the black market for sleeping pills.

  • Yay cold!! :D  We have/had a snow storm today, and there were about 3 inches of super fluffy stuff on the ground.  Which, admittedly, was not easy to ride my bike in.
  • Good morning! H and I just got up, we are about to eat some breakfast and then head to our friends house a bit later for Thanksgiving.
  • we've got a plan like that too, Mandy.  My plan is to go to New Mexico.  Our plan is contingent on either a.  our house being worth more than $2.63 or b.  paying off all our bills so we can afford to take a loss of the house.  So for the next few years, we're stuck here.

  • We had to get up this morning to make another pie, potato rolls, an marinate the turkey. So now I wait until 2 to go to my aunts house for lunch. Then we have dinner with a couple of friends. I don't know how everyone does more than one Thanksgiving. It's exhausting! I talked to one guy yesterday who said he has four to go to. FOUR!

  • I did 2 Thanksgivings for a couple of years, and that was plenty for me.

    KJB, why New Mexico?
  • Yeah if H was here, and if were home, we would have 2 Thanksgivings, which sucks.  And his family always does theirs earlier, and their food is way too bland for me.  But then by the time we get to my family's I'm not that hungry.  Can I tell you how much I'm not looking forward to going to their Christmas dinner without him?  I'm making it as quick as possible.

  • I would love to emigrate somewhere.  But, we'll see.  If I have to stay in Canada.  We ahve 2 options.  And one is a lot more affordable than the other, but the expensive one would have more job opportunities for my husband.  so we'll see :)

  • Emily - I have no idea. It's just where I've always wanted to move.  About a year or 2 ago, H was being recruited for a job in Albuquerque.  Unfortunately, I didn't end up working out, but that would have been fun.  I want to go somewhere south of here for sure.

  • Well that's cool. I just don't think I know anyone else who dreams of moving to New Mexico specifically, so I was wondering.
