Red, White, and Blue Cake?

Hi, my Fiance and I want to do a red/white/blue wedding [ http://forums.theknot.com/Sites/theknot/Pages/Main.aspx/wedding-theme-boards_offbeat-weddings_pull-off-patriotic-wedding-being-tacky ]

And so we also want a red white and blue cake.

However, we think there isn't a good way to do it if the red/white/blue is on the OUTSIDE. Because we can't think of a way to do it that wouldn't look over the top. So we're thinking an all white outside, with white roses, and a red/white/blue/inside.

So, like this:

White frosting, white chocolate filling, one layer red velvet, one layer blue velvet.

I looked up some photos, blue velvet didn't look as gaudy as I thought it would.

here are some photos I found.

So something that's a combination of all of those photos, except with white roses on the cake instead of red.

Thoughts on this idea?
Do you think this is too riske or tacky or out of the blue?
Do you like it?

I love the idea. You could also do the cake with the different colors of the batter swirled together.

I've seen some pretty Fourth of July cakes that were decorated with lots of blueberries.  You could have white frosting with blueberries and strawberries and/or raspberries to get color on the outside.  Or you could have only blueberries, with red velvet cake inside, so you'd have white frosting, blue decorations, and red cake.  I feel like that might look more elegant than having multiple colors inside (which would be seen in each slice or are they separate cake tiers?).

While the blue velvet cake is pretty, it does not look terribly appetizing.  Why not have a fun cake of white butter cream with red and blue fondant dots.  If you deliberately use multiple colors of reds and blues, it would look cute rather than kitsch.    That way you can have whatever flavors you truly wanted for the interior.

Although I love the look of the blue cake, I am not sure if it would be very enticing.  I don't know how formal your wedding is going to be, but the blue has the potential to be a little messy!  I know that, as a guest, I would choose one of the other flavors to avoid having a bright blue mouth and lips for the rest of the reception.

That's a good point, about it being not too appetizing/enticing looking... I didn't think of that since I was so mesmerized by the color. However, if the cake itself is blue, why would you worry about having a bright blue mouth? Red velvet cake doesn't turn your lips or tongue red, or chocolate cake turn your lips or tongue brown...

I love your idea!! I adore blue velvet cake and think it would look great. HOWEVER, like PP have mentioned, the blue will stain if too much food coloring is used and sometimes the color can be found in the toilet a few days after too.. :O !!

I'd see if your baker can swirl the two or maybe just do red velvet with some blue decorations on the outside of the cake.

There is a cake iced in white buttercrea (you could do fondant) with blue swags and multi colored flowers (you could do just red flowers).  All three colors are used in a tasteful way.
