Being a grown up is crazy.

You might remember several weeks ago when something fell on my head and I was having prolonged headaches and feeling generally out of sorts.  I went to the doctor and she wanted me to get a CT scan just to be sure nothing was wrong due to the weird symptoms I had.

I got the bill today, and it was $484.

I have decent health insurance being a federal employee, and they paid $300 and change.  I'm not worried about the cost that's left for out of pocket, but holy crap lesson learned that "just to be sure" can be expensive.

I am still amazed sometimes at the stuff grown ups have to take care of that I never knew as a child or even young adult.  Anything come to mind for you that is/was a shocker?

  • Filing taxes is grating on my nerves right now.  Being a grownup pretty much blows.
  • See post on house...lol

I think the biggest is just the random big bills like your scenario. Like, um...this isn't part of my budget, make it go away k?
  • My medical bills. But it's more than just one CT scan---because I've had three. I've also had a PET scan, MRI, Gallium Scan, Bone Marrow biopsy, lymph node biopsy, echo's, PFT's, Edoscopy's, a colonoscopy, a lung biopsy and lavage...

In the last month along? 12 grand.
In the last 10 months? Near 100 grand.

  • I hope you're left with that out of pocket cost simply because its early in the year and you haven't hit your deductible yet.  Best of luck!

In a way, I don't think I care about how much it's going to cost me but Mr. S drew the line to $1,000 and that's it. I hope she just wants different food and nothing is wrong.

<div>Our dog does this. We'll feel him, he'll put his head in his bowl to sniff it---and then walk away. And it turned out that he just gets super bored with his food. Although we don't change his food (because that's bad for his stomach), we do doctor it a lot. So...we'll wet it down, and then mix in carrots until he gets board with that. Right now we are mixing in crumbled up Pounce (aka--cat treats). It's the only way we can get him to eat. </div>

The cost of fixing a car just kills me. And paying $250/month for health insurance also blows, but at least I have it I guess.

And I hear ya on the pet bills, Nova/Rach. Everything is x3 for us, but we considered that before getting 3 cats.

  • Whew, I was scared you were having to pay that out of pocket. I could see if they were elective procedures but you aren't exactly having fun here. That's a relief that insurance is paying for it.
  • Pets do = expensive. Last fall our cat got really sick and we were faced with having to pay 800$ to do tests to find out what was wrong (not including treatment) or 300$ to put her down, and at the time I was unemployed and we had just moved so we didnt even have 100$. We had no one and no where we could borrow 800$ from on a saturday afternoon so we had to put her down and it was the crappiest "adult" decision weve had to make. It sucked balls. Im not even sure if this answers the question.

[QUOTE]Kate#s, may I ask what health insurance company do you have? Mr. S just got a federal job and we're currently researching health plans and all that junk. If you're not comfortable with posting the info here, can you PM me? Thanks.

No problem!  I have Blue Cross Blue Shield, the Federal Employee Program aka FEPBlue.  I have additional coverage for vision through VSP, but not an additional dental plan because the bi-weekly cost of the plans totaled to be more than I'd pay for regular cleanings under the minimal coverage BCBS gives.

There are a lot of different options though, and I'm sure mine will change somewhat when we get married...what I have I chose when I was single.

    HTH!

  • I want a dog so bad........but the thought of vet bills, grooming and food bring me right back to reality.
  • Aw, I'm sorry Nebb - that's so sad! I would hate to be put in the situation to make that decision. I don't think I could do it. :(

  • CS, I like BCBS fine for now.  It's what I had growing up so I was comfortable with it.  I think the cost is outrageous no matter what though...since my parents were divorced, I always had dual coverage (dad state govt and mom teacher) so we paid next to nothing for prescriptions and stuff.  But, as I said, compared to a lot of my friends' costs, I have decent coverage.  Especially the deal for generic prescriptions, you get a bunch free and then way reduced each time after that if you pick the generics.

  • kate - I had a colposcopy and biopsy done here.  Apparently my insurance sucked (I'm on DH's now) because I got a bill for over $300 for it!  Had the same thing done on DH's ins and it was about $70.

In NY, I had kickass insurance and paid about the same amount ($300) for having surgery to remove a cyst on my knee, anesthesia included.

Wtf, Arkansas??  And my insurance was really expensive...it's cheaper for both me and DH on his plan than it was for me ALONE on mine.  I feel bad for people down here who think that being a teacher is going to provide insurance for their whole family, because to insure a family it's about 50% of your paycheck.

  • Thanks. I had a lot of guilt afterwards.

Friends of ours just bought a house and their boiler crapped out shortly after. I am pretty sure they had to pay 5000$+ for a new one, which has completely screwed their wedding plans. Theyre not happy about it.
  • i had this thought earlier tonight: "who the hell do i think i'm kidding? am i actually getting away with this pretending-to-be-an-adult stuff?"
  • Kate, I had something similar happen. I got hit in the back of the head really hard with a water balloon. I had to get a CT because I sorta passed out. Apparently my school insurance sucks and I was out $600 for that and the ER bill.

  • My teeth. I had dental bonding done on my 4 front teeth when I was 14 (due to some other dental work I needed to have) and, 10 years later, it was chipped and stained.

I got 3 veneers and a crown put on instead. Almost $1,000 a pop. My mom kept saying, "It is SO great you did that. Your teeth look great. I always wanted to do that for you but it was just so expensive." I ended up spending about $10k on dental work over the past 2 years for myself. (My parents paid for my orthodontics and other stuff when I was a kid. I can't even imagine!)

Oh, and of course my dental insurence said because it was just "cosmetic" they wouldn't cover any of it.

<div>I am going to insist my kids go to school at a university that has a teaching medical hospital on campus---this is how I get away with out paying anything. If I go to my own school's hospital = free. If I went anywhere else, I'd get screwed.</div>

Oh jesus thats rough :( I hate teeth for this very reason. Theyre too damn expensive.
  • Twitchy dog cost btu $700 in vet bills in two days.

I was in the hospital overnight last fall. They could never get an IV in me, but I still owe them $2000. I don't have insurance, thus I don't go to the doctor unless I am turning blue.  Ouch.

  • Rach, I go to UK, we have the best hospital in the state, and it's a teaching hospital. It still cost me that much because I'm only allowed 2,500 a year for ER bills. Anything else through UK is covered though. But, I pay 800 a year for that ins.

  • Nebb, my insurance actually did cover some of my bills. I had to have a tooth pulled and get an implant. And a deep cleaning. And some fillings. So without insurance it would have been way more. But I still get angry when I think about it. Thankfully I was able to pay it all off in a timely manner. It was also nice to have the huge deduction on my taxes last year. Though not as nice as it would have been to have that money in my pocket!

  • LVB---ahhhh, I see, it was an ER visit. I think the only money I have had to pay out of pocket so far was related to my ER visit last year before I was admitted. I suppose that makes sense.
