Broadway shows

Re: Broadway shows

  • Sparrow, I actually loved Legally Blonde and I was not expecting to like it. I didn't like Mary Poppins as much though....there were moments. I am a huge fan of the song that Mrs. Banks sings in the MOVIE, and in the play they give her some crappy ballad that's for mezzos! Gah, makes me want to slap the creative team just thinking about it!
How bad does everyone think of me that I secretly want to see Shrek just a little bit? I have xm radio in my car and I listen to the bway channel whenever I drive. Shrek music comes on at least once a day and it's cute!
    Posted by stina93446
I really enjoyed the music to Shrek, too!  It's clever and catchy without being too cheesy (like Spamalot).  I also really like Sutton Foster and Brian d'Arcy James.  I'm sad that's closing, too! (or has it already closed?  It makes me too sad to keep up on things.)

DH and I saw Spring Awakening before it won the Tony - I like the music more than I like the show itself.
In Response to Re: Broadway shows : Okay, Phantom was the first Bway show I saw, back in 1992ish, so it holds a special place in my heart.  But I've seen it a few times since then and it was just awful.  I can't imagine a sequel being good.  At all. Haven't we learned our lesson from Annie Warbucks and Snoopy?
    Posted by sucrets4
I saw it once with the understudy of the understudy cast on a school trip when we got to see the behind the scenes. The second time I saw it was just as good. But I think it would be interesting anyway to see where the storyline could go after all of this time, and regardless, I love most of ALW 's works. But I hear you on the sequels having a history of not being thrilling.

Legally Blonde was cute for what it was.  It's not a major piece of theater, but it's amusing and I liked the music.  It's on the same level as Wedding Singer, in my book.

I haven't seen Mary Poppins and would like to just for the fact that I've heard it's pretty good and a lot darker than the movie.  That intrigues me.

Ugh, brought my college bf to see it and I was embarrassed.  It was awful.  And the trumpet player sucked, and my bf at the time was a trumpet major.

I'm more of a fan of ALW's older stuff.  JCS and Joseph have much better music than anything newer, imho.

  • Why is it that when I see Phantom, I can't have a completely good cast? When Christine is good, Carlotta sucks. When Carlotta's on, Raoul is terrible. Meg never has any sense of pitch and when the phantom is sick, Raoul has to move in and do it.....

And holy crap, Shrek already closed! Poop! I heard that Addams family is crap!

I think of Phantom (and Rent, actually) as "gateway musicals" - kids usually get hooked and it leads to discovering more quality shows, lol.

Yeah, I thought Shrek already closed.  I remember a flood of closings announced in the fall.  Sad times.

Idk-- I saw it both times in Toronto -- never in NY, and it was great both times?

I think that my parents wanted to get us to more shows, it just never was in the family budget. As for other musicals: I grew up on the movie versions and can't wait til I have the budget to go see them live. If I ever get over my fear of NY that is.
  • I like William Finn's music in general, but Spelling Bee is really clever.  It was the first show I took DH to and he LOVED it!

Wedding Singer was so bad it was good.  Same thing with Footloose.

I think as long as you expect cheese, there's nothing wrong with those types of shows.

I am dying to see WSS, though.  I can't even tell you how many times I've played that locally and I'd LOVE to hear it performed live.  Ahhh, the fugue in Cool is just amazing!

Ooo - does anyone know what order Cool and Krupke are in in the revival?  It's written to be Cool in act 2, but many directors switch it and put Krupke in act 2 as some comic relief.

What's your local theater scene like?  Long Island (where I'm from) had an incredibly active community theater scene and you could basically see anything that the rights had been released to and sometimes they were quite good!  And usually tickets were around $20 each which is reasonable.

Local community theater is about at a nil and some of them around here you can't get tickets to just one show --- like there is one forty minutes away, but they only do season tickets, which is i think 6 shows during the year, and it includes dinner to all of them as well so it gets up there in price. We had a very small community theatre that a friend of mine was in, but it closed :(. Sometimes shows come to The Fox downtown, I saw Cats there, and the Rockettes, and I have seen Blast! multiples times ( not Broadway, but shows nonetheless) and all of them have been enjoyable. For those I usually get $20-30 tickets but I get a group rate and go with my old high school marching band :) Yes I am a nerd, I keep in touch, but I get hooked up when it counts!

Awww that's sweet of her! How is she handling at school - is she showing yet? I know when I was at school I wore super baggy shirts and my boobs were so big you couldn't see my belly bulge, and the semester ended before I got noticeable. Yet also I remember high school kids were cruel and I was so happy I was in a mature college setting when I got pg and not HS. I hope she is doing alright, I think about you both ( in a non-creepy, send you healthy pg vibes, add you to the prayer chain if you believe it sort of way).

I never heard back from her after I gave her my letter, so I didn't know if she was planning on returning this semester or not.  She was there yesterday, and we chatted a bit today.  I asked her if she was planning on telling people and she said that a few people know and that of course it's getting out and random people are coming up to her.

She's starting to show now, but it wasn't too noticeable before.  Apparently she's been having a lot of other health issues and lost a lot of weight in her 1st tri.  She wasn't skinny before, but not fat, either.  She had some pudge in the middle which I guess was replaced by baby but since she lost weight it wasn't easy to tell.

I don't know how people will respond, but sadly, I think it's somewhat common down here.  :(  She said her mom was excited, though, which made me happy for her.

    Thanks for the vibes!  I appreciate it and don't think it's creepy at all.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

  • You are more than pretty lucky to not have been green for three + months.

I am sorry to hear that it is pretty common down there --- I had no idea how common it was up here until a few months ago when all of a sudden half the people I went to high school with have babies and most of the kids are close to my sons age or older!! Thankfully a  lot of them are married now, but wow.

While it is sad that it is common, maybe people won't be so cruel to her. I remember there were a few in my class that had babies before graduation and it wasn't pretty. Girls were worse than guys.

I am glad that her mom is excited! That eases my mind a lot..... having gone through it with my parents.  Always best wishes for all the babies. I am going through baby fever and living vicariously through all my pg friends/family on FB and here lol. 2 more years.... its like a chant. I will be done with school and married. FI wants me to be pg at the wedding like a month or so or within about 2 months of the wedding LOL. I said lets go get married next week and then we can get pg NOW!
  • I think it's more common where I work because it's a poor, rural town.  Although I know of 2 kids from my school in NY that now have kids.  Scary!  They're college age and I remember them as little middle schoolers.

I wish you a speedy time until your wedding!

I need to head to bed, but I'm sure we'll chat soon.  Have a good nice!
