Things that are better left unsaid

So apparently Prince William is Kate Middleton's 14th cousin. <--clicky

I don't ever want to know I'm related to BF, even though I realize that most families are probably related somehow.  I just don't want to know.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton

I don't think that a close enough relationship to cause any concern.

We all probably have thousands of 14th cousins.

It does make since though. Doesn't she have some title? I think everyone who has a title is related to the royal family some how way back in history.

True, and 14th cousins is definitely still "okay" to marry, but I just like to believe I"m not related to someone I'm dating.

And I mean, even in rural West Virginia, there's a town that's like 80% related to my BF.  So I guess it could happen anywhere, lol.

Trufax! where I grew up, most of my high school was somehow related to me... at the very least by marriage (lots of divorce in the area). I felt like I had to sit down and compare family trees before I could agree to go on a date. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-sealed.gif" border="0" alt="Sealed" title="Sealed" />

That's just a really funny mental image :)  I also imagine it could cause some undo family drama, though - ya know, like mom's ex's sister's ex's wife cheated on dad's ex's sisters's husband or something.  I always feel like a doof when we go out to WV, though, because we run into his relatives EVERYWHERE.  But luckily, I think they know who I am now.  It's just like "oh my gosh, another relative"

Is there even such a thing as someone you're not related to, though?

I mean, whether you believe in evolution or creation, you'll still follow the basic theory of a common ancestor.  I'm distantly related to everyone including all of you bitches.

Seriously, 14th cousin?  That's as close to unrelated as you can get.  You have to go back a looooot of generations (15 in fact) to find that common bond.

14th cousin means they share a Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandparent. Yes that's 13 Greats. The amount of similar DNA after all of those generations has to be miniscule.

Queen Elizabeth and her husband are third cousins through one person and second cousins once removed through another. The amount of inbreeding over there is just sickening....

Kate does not have a title; she is 100% a commoner. Princess Diana had a title before she married Prince Charles; she was Lady Diana Spencer.

14th cousins is pretty far away...Considering you are technically allowed to marry your first cousin in a lot of places, it hardly matters.

Where I come from, everyone is related (there's a lot of mennonites). Except me. I'm an import. My Mom is sorta from the area (but not really, and not mennonite), and my Dad isn't from anywhere close. BF, on the other hand, has one of the super common last names, and his family is mennonite. Because his family is mennonite, and my family is far from it, I know you'd have to go back really, really, really far to find any relation.

Ireland is an island, too... and my parents had a little confusion that was almost a panic right before their wedding!

My Mom had just been back to Ireland to visit her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins since they couldn't make the wedding in June.  She was having dinner one early May evening at my Dad's family's house, and was talking about her trip.  There was a man in the room she had never met - let's call him John Donahue.  Well, my Dad's Mom's maiden name was Donahue, so my Mom assumed it was my Dad's uncle or cousin or something.

When my Mom went home the next day, her father called her and said, "I heard you met your cousin John at dinner the other night."  My Mom said, "What do you mean, cousin?!" And her Dad said, "He's my sister Charlotte's boy."  If my Mom had photos from her trip, John Donahue would have seen his Mom, sisters, and nieces & nephews!!!  My Mom nearly had a heart attack thinking her first cousin was my Dad's uncle.  She called my Dad's parents up, crying hysterically.  Turns out he wasn't related to my Dad's family at all - the name similarity was a coincidence.  Close call, though!

I became really interested in geneology after I heard that story - I figured out that degree of cousin is exactly as Amethyst said - the number of ancestors you have to go back to find the same person in your family line.  So my grandpa's 1st cousin is my 3rd cousin, and my Mom's first cousin is my 2nd cousin - but my Mom's 1st cousin's kid is my 2nd cousin once removed.  I sometimes try to explain my family tree with "2nd cousin once removed" or "3rd cousin twice removed" but no one ever understands what I mean!

This isn't quite right.  "Removed" means separated by a generation.  Your mom's first cousin is your first cousin once removed.  Your mom's cousin's kid is your second cousin.

This site explains it better than I can, but yeah.  "cousin" means you share a common marriage somewhere back.  2 generations back (grandparents) for 1st cousins, 3 generations back for 2nd cousins, etc.

If you are talking different generations, you drop to the closest cousin possible and add the separation.

I didn't know until a couple of years ago either.  I just went along with what everyone else said.

Then I randomly ran into a third cousin in college, and I started doing research.

My grandfather and one of his cousins were "double first cousins".  Figure that one out!
