WWYD?

The wedding "coordinator" at my church called yesterday to tell me that they are having a program called Christmas in July. The stage will be covered in X-mas decorations and her solution for me is to put up a large black curtain to separate the decorations from my guests.

My question is why wasn't I told about this when I first booked my wedding? I have no choice my wedding is 8 days away but if I would have known a little sooner I could have made more arrangements with my florist to make sure I decorated accordingly. Now I feel like this big black curtain will over shadow my minimal flower arrangement. SMH!

What is wrong with church folks..they have no business sense!

Re: WWYD?

  • This is really the last thing you need right now. I am not sure that anything else could be done other than use the black curtain. Do you have a picture of your church stage? Maybe that will help us give you other suggestion.

And when does this play start? Are the decorations up already? Maybe they could hold off on putting it up until after the wedding.

LOL @ putting coordinator in quotes! we see you slim shady.

*serious face*: the Christmas pageant isn't during the ceremony so why can't the decorations be removed for service or simply applied afterwards? we're talking about ONE saturday, she can't schedule all that mess around the 20 minutes it'll take for your ceremony? how bout if you have somebody from the cipher volunteer to work with her on replacing everything? i'm thinking someone will be there afterwards to collect your flowers or aisle runner, no? I'm sorry, that's unacceptable, she's got to have a better solution than to put up a curtain, that's BLACK no less.
  • Wow?! 'Sorry girlie!! Thats definitely something she should have been up front about. That's what frustrates me with the church sometimes. We forget that it is a ministry AND a business. If this was your reception venue this would be completely unacceptable! Anywho, I would talk to them about your options like pp's said.

We ran into the similar but much smaller issue with our church. I asked if they would be removing the music equipment from stage and I was told no but they would cover it with a black shroud...really? But at the end of the day know one noticed because they were too focused on the wedding anyway. and our pictures still look great because my weddng party was standing in front of the equipment in the pictures.

((hugs)) I'm sorry. Those that work for the church are really showing out this week, huh?

I agree with PP. Let's see a pic, if you have one and we can work from there. However, I agree with asking if you can take a pic of the decor, have someone from your side willing to work with her to remove and replace everything according to the picture, as 8 days is too short of notice for you to coordinate a different plan with your florist, photographer, etc.

  • First I send you ((hugs))...now why in the sam west hell did she not inform you of this a while ago? I am sure she knew well in enough time and not 8 days before your wedding? Why is it imperative that the decorations be up sooo early? If you contracted the church for your wedding and paid for it to be the way you want it for your wedding then she shouldn't be coming at you about some Christmas inJuly stuff...She has to be able to have this set up after your wedding who wants a big black curtain in the church for their wedding?? I hope that she can work something out for you....
  • I agree with other pp...I'm sorry this is happening 8 days out...just try and relax and not let it stress you to the max. It will all work out for you !

  • hugs Carla. Sorry this is happening at this moment. You do not need this added stress at this time. I agree with everyone else. See if they can take the decor down for wedding and put it bweddings free your wedding. this completely unacceptable. I am sure you have in some form or fashion monetarily contributed for use of the church for your ceremony. You should ask them the same question you posted to us and explain to them what you said about making preparations if you had more time. Send us a picture of the church and I'm sure we can give you some additional ideas. Keep us posted in what the "coordinator" says after you talk to her again. Cha

  • Thanks everyone! I'm really trying not to stress. The X-mas decorations are so large and massive that they will not take them down until the end of July. I just called the Pastor's secretary and got her involved and said that I need some of my money back. I did not have this in mind when I booked the church, nor when I paid a florist to decorate. Now I may have to add more decorations so it will look like I wanted this. She does not have any pictures of what they curtain looks like.

Any google wizards out there can you post any pictures you find of wedding decor in front of a curtain? I'm sure someone has been married in a theater hall?

This. At the very least, they need to pay for the modifications you're going to need to make.

A couple of these are reception set ups and I don't know what the draping is hanging on but your coordinator should know how to modify for same look at th altar. Hope it helps.

this one isn't standard but if you can put something eye-catching at the altar, it'll detract from everything else. hell everybody's gonna be looking at you anyway, but just in case, more visual ideas will take your mind off fake Christmas.

  • these pictures are great ladies! thanks! I'm starting to feel not all hope is lost. I can add some up lighting to the curtains and more flowers and it might actually turn out nice. They just need to give me back some money.

I'm still waiting for her to give me an answer, she has to check with the pastor. I try to be very reasonable and mistakes happen, but I'm not happy that this "coordinator" isn't doing her job. And yes it is her job if she gets paid and not volunteering.

  • Carla, i love draping in weddings However, sometimes it can get expensive...it just depends. Your wedding is only 8 days away so why do they even need to put the Christmas decor up now? Are they having a special program during the week for the Christmas in July "theme"? Because if they do not need it until Sunday, then can you ask them to wait to put the decorations up until after your wedding?
