Getting in Shape

Working Out @ Work

Ok, so I'm new to The Knot and just got engaged a week ago.
We've been throwing around dates and we've decided (not written in stone yet but pretty darn close to it) for March 2013!

So that's LESS THAN A YEAR away!!!
I've been going crazy thinking of when I could work out but by the time I get home from work, make supper and sit for a short time it's time for bed.

So I thought about it and realized that the best place to extercise would be at work.
Where I need the help/advice is what types of exercise should I do that will REALLY whip my body into shap. I know I have to eat properly...I can do that, but I need the exercise to go with it!

Any advice is always appriciated!

    Welcome and congrats!

A few questions, is there a gym at your work? Do you have access to a shower? That may impact the type of exercises that would be appropriate for you if you are doing this on your lunch hour or something. Can you go for a walk or a run on your lunch hour? I'm assuming if your work has a gym then there is a shower. The world is your oyster if thats the case. I get a lot of work outs from pinterest and bodybuilding.com or just googling things like "arm work outs."

Evenings are tough for me too - which is why I work out in the mornings before work. I know it sounds hard, and it is. Somedays I really don't want to get up. But it's so worth it. I dont eat 9pm dinners anymore, I'm not skipping work outs to hang out with friends or because I've had a bad day at work. Try it maybe 1 or 2 times a week and see if you like it!

You also mentioned your diet. Definitely clean that up. That should be priority number 1, even before working out. 70% diet/30% working out. You won't get results if you don't clean that up. Start using something like myfitnesspal or spark people to food log and try to eat as clean as possible.

  • I do push ups and squats in my office. Also google standing ab workout or something similar. I learned a few tips from there.

  • I wish I had a gym and shower here! That would be 100% easier!
I have a nice spacious office so I don't have an issue working out here. It's just what to do is the question. I'm not a huge fan of running, but since my options are limited I might do it anyways!

Squats sound good. My fiance and I bought kettle bells last year and I've wanted to bring them to the office, but...DOH....I keep forgetting. It'll make it that much harder to do, but much more worth it.

I completly agree about the eating!
We've got into a terrible habit of take out. We usually get pizza once a week. That's really my weakness. LOL.

So, besides running, squats and push up are there any really good things that could work in the office?

  • Well if you can't sweat really I think it would be hard to get a good work out in. It sounds like cardio would not be an option, which limits you. K had a good idea with work out DVDs. Other than that maybe you could purchase some dumbbells and bring them to your office?

  • I agree I just got engaged a few weeks ago too and I have found that I have to wake up at the crack of dawn. I needed motivation so I hired a trainer and work out in the mornings with him 3 times a week and than I pull myself up on the other days get home shower than off to work.
Also try taking a hula hoop to work.  It's perfect for a spacious office and works!  Just take a few 10 minute breaks throughout the day. Thanks this motivated me so I'm not the only one.
  • I wish I had an hour lunch break... I envy those of you that do!  I work in a healthcare setting and even though we have an incredible gym on campus, we don't have the time to utilize it during the day. :-/

If there is no gym or access to equipment there is still plenty you can do.

We USED to try to get all the girls here to work out during lunchbreaks, somebody would bring in a workout DVD and we'd do that in a boardroom.  But nobody ever kept up with it.

Walking is always a great start.  Good to get away from work to clear your head and its easy and free.  That is what we do and then we do additional working out at home.  At least if a day goes by where we are too busy at home to workout, then at least during the day we did do something and got off our butts.  Just pack your back and your Ipod, out the door!

You could also leave a pair of weights in your office or cubicle too

  • I work in a corporate office that does not have a gym or shower and I use walking as my primiary form of "work" exercise. On breaks I take walks with coworkers around the track outside or the trails behind the office.

Do you work with lots of other people or are you primarily "alone" in the office? I wouldn't want to do a workout video if a bunch of other people were trying to work.

  • I brought a Crunch dvd to work with me today. It's in ten minute increments, so if I space them out I won't get sweaty. I'd look into those, they're pretty good.

I don't have a gym or shower available to work but I do workout here. I do like five minutes of something every hour. I have two sets of weights, a jump rope, and some body weight strength training exercises I do. Basically I try to get a full workout in by doing it in five to ten minute increments so I don't feel like I need a shower. I'd suggest things like various types of push ups, ab workouts, wall sits, squats, lunges, etc.

  • I'm LOVING alllll your feedback. I think (starting next week...ya ya...I know I know..lol) with weights and I'll look for something I can use on my computer that has great exercises.

I don't know if it's just me, but today has been one hell of a day. It's nuts in the office and I just overheard my co-work get bitched out by his boss and the boss of his boss.
I feel horrible for him right now. Frown
He stayed up till 1am just to get some paperwork done.
I know it's off topic but I needed a mini vent.

  • Do you have youtube access on your work computer. I did a ten minute zumba I found on there and a ten minute total body plyometric workout. You can find some pretty decent ones if you scrounge enough.
