Re: welcome baskets!

  • I'm doing the same thing, I have a ton of out of towners coming into Michigan! What I'm doing is including a few necessary small things like bottles of water, ideas of what to do in the area, directions to and from the church and reception hall, and then a couple things that you can only find in Michigan - like cherry salsa or Faygo pop or Macinac Island fudge.
  • I think that water and snacks that are expensive to get if you are staying in a hotel are the best things to put in welcome bags (which are totally optional in general).  We put bottled water, trail mix, Sun Chips, mints, and 4th of July Tootise Rolls (our wedding was over 4th of July weekend).  I've seen homemade cookies in welcome bags, which are nice if you have the time and can make them close enough to your guests' arrivals that they'll be fresh.

You can add a few area-specific items.  We also had a map of the town and some coupons--both from the local chamber of commerce.  You could add a tourist map of NYC, some suggestions of your favorite places to eat or visit, and some NYC foods (black and white cookies?).

  • Check out http://www.sarasgraciousgoodies.com/ - they have really cute, NY-themed gift baskets (and even if you don't buy from that site, you can steal their ideas!)

  • If you're getting married in a city, I think it's nice to provide OOT guests with suggestions for good places to eat, drink and play nearby -- save them some Yelp-ing!

<div>I like this idea!  We will be doing something similar just for our wedding website.  We are getting married in a "touristy" area so most of the hotels already have suggestions, etc.</div>
  • We tried to keep it simple; water, single-serving snacks, and I made up a pamphlet that included all the needed wedding info (times and addresses) as well as local restaurants, places that would deliver to the hotel, and a few local shops (like starbucks and walgreens, JIC)

The feedback I got was that people were REALLY appreciative of the water, after a long night out :-) haha, so make sure there's at least one per person!
  • maps, and travel items they maybe didn't pack themselves. My SIL made the bags for all the OOT guests and there were lint rollers, snacks, maps, more snacks. We wanted to put in soda from the town we live in now, but ran out of funds and time.

Definitely get a map or travel book for NYC with pages highlighted (where you like to eat, where the hotel is, closest subway station, etc) we did that, and it was way easier for people to drive around and explore.
