June 2012 Weddings

Donations

What is the typical donation to the officiant and musicians? I figured $100 for our priest and $50 for our musician. Do you just do cash in a thank you card?

For our pastor we are doing $100. It is a donation to the church in our name.

Our priest isn't in our parish anymore. He was our priest through my time at the Catholic high school and did my confirmation and everything. We got new priests assigned to our parish and I wanted someone that knew me to marry us. Our priest works in the diocese with vocations I think? And he works 40 minutes from the town we're getting married in. Should we do a donation to him AND the church?

I would make a donation to both, but not directly to the priest.... I know nothing about being Catholic or what teh diocese with vocations is.... but can you make a donation there?

I have no clue :/ lol. I asked my mom and she said she wasn't sure if it's changed because they donated $100 to their priest but that was 27 years ago. She told me to google it haha

  • I am not sure about the diocese with vocations but, for what it is worth, we are preparing with a priest at one parish and getting married by another priest at another parish. We are doing a donation to both parishes - $100 to the one we are preparing at and then whatever the amount that the church we are marrying at has set.

I have both of my cousins who are Monsignors performing our wedding. We are also in debate about how much we should tip them. I even asked my grandma and she said more than likely they would not accept it from us. But we were thinking $50 each, and putting it in an envelope for our Best Man to hand out. I don't even think that $50 is enough, especially since one of my Cousins is coming to California from New York to perform the ceremony for us.

It's stated in our guidelines to use the church that the minister honorarium is $150-200, the wedding coordinator is $150 and the musicians are $125-250 each.

*We also have a $300 fee to use the sanctuary.

We don't have any fees since I'm a member but I don't want to not do anything
  • $350 for church (parishioner, $500 non-parishioner)

$125 check made payable to the organist
$125 check made payable to the soloist if applicable
$175 check made payable to the organist if he/she is also the soloist

Out of the $350 to the church the priest gets $100.

  • For us, there are no mandatory fees, however the *suggested* donation is $200 to the church (priest) and $150 to the organist, additionally, $10 or $15 for each altar boy (we are only having 1)

<div>Can you write a check? I just think that looks a little less "under the table." Cash works too, but I just think of that as more of a tip than an honorarium. Putting it in a thank you card is great though.</div>

Good point. I usually hate writing checks because I don't balance my checkbook I just use online banking :P but a check would look nicer
  • I am giving mine $100 donation for the church and will put it in a really nice thank you card

  • We plan on paying our officiant $200 and our DJ $200. These aren't tips though, they are payments. We have a free DJ (friend of the family owns a record company and they do weddings) and we would like to pay him something for his time and as a thank you. I need to double check with my officiant, if all the money I give him goes to his church (which we aren't using) then we won't give him that much, or we will find a way he will get to keep it, like a thank you card with cash. Anyone know how that should work? (He had to pay for our counceling out of his own pocket. Prepare/Enrich registration. So I am not sure how it works at his church....)

I think a lot of times they are allowed to keep their honorarium, but they donate it to the church in your name. This way they're still performing the marriage as an act of God and not making any money off of it, while the church and your parish benefit from it.

Thanks! I asked him and he said he gets to keep anything he earns from community events (such as funerals, wedding, etc.) I think his church is so small they kind of do stuff different. I don't go to his church, he is my cousin. :)

  • Our church (we're not members there) just asked for a donation. The standard honorarium for an officiant is $200, so we'll give that to the pastor, and then donate another $100-150 to the church. We're not using their musicians at all.
