Personal Touches in Ceremony/Reception

I guess this is 2 things at once....

I teach middle school science and have been toying around with some ideas of how I can put some personal touches into my ceremony and reception.
I do have a former student who was wonderful at playing Violin and she is willing to play at the ceremony. I would add her name into the Program with a short bio.
At the reception I would love to make some sort of science lab table but I can't think of anything fun to put there that people would get a kick out of. There will be children at the wedding so maybe having activities that they can do to occupy there time could be fun.

What are some of the ideas you may have or have already used?
Thanks!
Brenda

Maybe you can tie something in to the specialty drink or you can use science vessels to hold drinks/food in? Like for a passed food during cocktail hour a popular one is a shooter of tomato soup or pea soup maybe it could be served in a test tube?

Just be careful that it represents you but isn't too themed or over the top.

I met many of my friends doing theatre and a summer theatre group and I had one of them playing the piano/organ and 2 others singing at our reception. And for cocktail hour we had a live piano player who played some old Rodgers and Hammerstein and Cole Porter type songs nothing over the top like memory from cats that everyone would know as being Broadway but just a few that would register in peoples minds esp if they knew theatre.

I think a science project is an interesting idea, but has the potential to get really messy or complicated.

How about using beakers as flower vases, name your tables after your favorite scientists, incorporate a subtle molecule or DNA illustration into your stationery/place cards?

MH is a science teacher and I would've LOVED a Liberty Science Center reception. But they wanted WAY too much money :(

oooo i love the dry ice in the drink!! that may be really cool for a signature drink.

I was also nervous about the science lab table being too complicated and messy as well!

Keep the ideas coming !!! Thanks!!

Wow you girls are good!!  I love all the ideas!  The dry ice is just so cool, science theme or not!  I definitely think little test tube vases in clusters could be really cute - maybe for the cocktail hour.

How about a candy buffet at the end so that everyone could make their own mixtures?

As favors you could use little test tubes with a cork stopper to seal them and ribbon tied around them and inside could be M&Ms in your wedding colors.

In going along with the candy buffet suggestion above, you could have the candy set up in beakers of all different sizes.

Love the dry ice and periodic table seating chart suggestions.

My only question - is your FI a science nut, too?  You're going to want to avoid making the wedding all about you and your interests.

Luckily he is a science nut so these tie ins would work --- but I definitely do not want to go overboard with everything..... M&M's in a test tube is also a cute idea! Love it!

Brenda I think you're like my new best friend LOL.  You're getting married at the Graycliff too the week before us and you're a science teacher like me!
