Save the Dates?

I am definitely planning to send out save the dates to our family and friends, but don't know when to do it.  I have been telling people, especially those OOT, because I know it's easier to make travel plans well in advance, but when's the official 'ok' time?

I sent mine 9 months out. It seemed to be enough time, except for my college roommate who called me yesterday asking where she should stay.

We sent ours out in March and we're getting married in October.

I'll send mine out in Early November and getting married in June. But it will only be sent to family, OOT guest and our closest friends. Just remember that who ever you send a STD you MUST send them an invite.

I sent mine first week of Jan with belated x-mas cards for a Sept wedding.  Might be a tad too long, but we didn't get any complaints.  I'd say anywhere from 6-8 months maybe a tad longer so people have a heads up even those local.  Depending on the date of your wedding (if it's a holiday or a day you know a lot is going on) it's advised to send them with plenty of notice also.

    This!
I wouldn't send them to ANYONE that you have an OUNCE of doubt about them coming.  I included co workers in mine and didn't think twice about how relationships with coworkers can change even if you have been friends for a while.

about six months in advance is the standard, unless your wedding falls on a holiday/event weekend or something like that.
I sent mine out 9 months in advance for our Sunday of Columbus Day weekend wedding.

I think how early you send them also depends on how many OOT people you have coming.  If you have a lot of OOT guests, then you might want to send them earlier so they have more time to make arrangements.
Personally I sent mine out in January for a July wedding.  I didn't want mine to get mixed up in all that holiday mail!

If you have a great number of OOT guests I would say earlier the better.  I voted for 6 months since a year is a bit much, but in reality I think ours were 9 months out as well.

Thanks so much for all of the advice! I was thinking about sending them out in the fall, so that seems to be consistent with many of you who said somewhere between 6 and 12 months.  :)
