What are the Gluten-Free girls doing for the cake?

I'm gluten-free and my FI is amazing and also eats 95% GF.  I don't think it would be economical to purchase a GF cake for all of my guests to eat because GF flour is so expensive.  I was thinking about having one cake made that is not GF with either the top level of the cake being GF or having a smaller cake similar to the real cake made GF.  I'm just not sure what I should do and am having a hard time picking out cake designs.  It's probably silly but it's important to me I get to have a bit of the same cake as my FI when we do the cake cutting.  I don't even care what the regular cake is, he can pick all of that out and I'll pick the design but I'm just at a total loss for what would be easiest.

Any suggestions?

I think either one of those ideas is good. I would talk to your baker about possible solutions. They would know what is best.

I'm not sure if we are going to use a baker because we are trying to save money in all the areas we can.  We each have a family member that make nice cakes and have for weddings, etc that are willing to make ours but I don't want it to be too difficult.  I was thinking of making my own cake and having the person making the cake, frost my cake as well.

    Thanks for the advice.

If you are not going to use a baker I would just have a smaller cake. I have gane to a wedding where instead of a big cake that had lots of smaller cakes on stands. It was really cute. You could do that and have one be GF.

I just made a great GF cake (my brother and sister both are on GF diets.) It was easy and cheap. I made a meyer lemon upside down cake with almonds instead of flour. I bake A LOT and would imagine the recipe would be easy to manipulate into other flavors. Let me know if you would be interested in the recipe. :) I agree that a small personal cake for you and your soon to be hubby sounds great and a different one for everyone else.

I would love the recipe, if you wouldn't mind sending it to me!  I'm always up for new recipes, especially delicious desserts!  I have a really good chocolate mocha cake I was thinking of making and having my cousin put fondant on it so it's easier to decorate.  I'm still not sure but I'm going to be sending a package home with recipes and GF flours for her to experiment with and would love to have another option!

    Thank you!!!

I'm GF DF. My Fiance is not. My future MIL is "the wedding cake lady" of my small town, and she had the brilliant idea to make the groom's cake GF DF and the bride's cake (aka the big one) with regular flour. We are going to cut a piece of the bride's cake for me to feed to my fiance, and cut a piece of the groom's cake for him to feed to me.

If you're not into multiple cakes, just get whoever is doing the cake to separate the layers with a cakestand (versus layering them on top of eachother) and have the smallest layer be GF.

    Hope this helps!

Congrats on your wedding! I am getting a "cake topper" from Deerfield's Bakery in Deerfield, IL that is gluten-free. They have different fillings and frostings, all gluten-free. Then I am doing a bunch of mini gluten-free cupcakes. They'll all be placed on a DIY cupcake tower that was easy to make and classy! Good luck!
