Swedes take environmentalism very seriously

H just handed me a copy of his itinerary for his trip the next couple of days.  It has his carbon footprint for his flights listed so he can buy carbon credits or make up for it in some other way. 

And we were just figuring out this recycling gig.

    What's 'carbon credits'? How do you make up for it?

    Why wouldn't his company cover his carbon credits? They're the ones sending him places.

    You can purchase a share in a wind turbine or some other sort of green scheme.  Or, you... take your bike to work for 2 weeks instead of driving your car, or buy products that are grown locally, and don't have to be trucked in.  For example, when I go to the store and want to buy fruit, it will say from which country it all came.

    Hm.  Good question.  I know they support and fund programs to recycle the specific product they manufacture, but obviously, that doesn't really cover the carbon footprint of their employees.

    So he has to prove that he made up for it? Like track his miles on the bike or something? I'd probably just buy credits, but I'm lazy like that.

    Nono no... it's voluntary.  I assume people just wanted to know, so they put it on there.  It wasn't on his Italian itineraries.

    Gotcha. So it's just more of an awareness in general. I thought he was required to make up for it. If only that would catch on worldwide.

    Yeah, just awareness.  If he had to make up for it personally, that would blow.  He's made 3 trips to China, 2 to India and maybe 5 to the US and back.

    Georgia, he's so colorless, he hates beige.  He's Mr. White Guy. :D

    Sarah, I think it's cool too, but daunting when he travels so much.

    I wish I made my wedding colors orange and purple. Really!

    I think carbon credits are a huge racket. "I'll just throw money into planting trees so I can pollute x amount." Like that really makes up for it.

    (No offense to your H's "polluting" - I know plane travel is necessary and all, believe me! I just think they're designed to make you feel guiltless and... you really aren't? If that make sense.)

    Local agriculture is awesome. I get it here a lot. But me thinks you won't have local fruits and veg all year round in Sweden!

    Oh sure, but first of all, if he has to travel for work, he can't NOT take a plane. And while I'm sure whatever the carbon offsets go to are good causes, I think overall reduction of your carbon footprint in the first place is better than trying to "erase" it later on by doing something environmentally positive. We should all probably work on reducing our emissions and producing greener alternatives, right?

    Indeed, but given that travel is, as you mention, an essential part of many jobs (and peoples' lives) which is somewhat unavoidable without new 'green' technology, I don't see the harm in having trees grown in order to offset your environmental pollution.

    And honestly, even if these schemes don't offset the pollution, at the least, they're getting people to think about the impact that their actions have on the environment. I don't see raising awareness in that way as a negative thing.

    Gotcha. Yeah, before the whole carbon footprint/carbon offsets thing, for some reason it didn't occur to me how really horrible air travel is in terms of pollution.

    I hear ya on the European environmentalism. My sister has to spend something like $3 per garbage bag, which MUST be purchased from the canton. She has a WHOLE lot less garbage now that she has to pay so much to dispose of it.

    Um, recycling in the States is hit and miss to be honest.  Most of the time, you have to pay extra for it, and a lot of people don't.  But, I've been gone for a while, so it might have changed?  I think the best state for it is California.

    Sweden has multiple and multiple of recycling types.  We have a whole building here for our garbage and recycling.  There's a spot for batteries (which is awesome) lightbulbs, white glass, colored glass, paper, cardboard, plastic, HARD plastic, and metal (cans, tinfoil) and then the regular junk bins.
