  • Well because the SA is always out and about. I never see other organiztions in front of grocery stores, malls, ....  (Maybe that is just MS.) I just think that would be a huge chunk of money lost. And lets face it, people are lazy. They don't want to take the time to find organiztions to donate to and they may say screw it and do nothing. But seeing that bucket and a smiling face may get a person who would otherwise not donate to actually donate.

True story.  FI and I have our donations set up as payroll deductions.  Both of our companies contribute a matching gift, though, so there's a perk to being lazy in this instance.

I'm actually less likely to donate to organizations that beg me outside of stores.  Just like I won't sign a petition from someone begging me outside of a store.  It's not what I'm there for and I find it irritating.  I mean, at least the SA doesn't beg, but I still feel like I'm being guilted into giving.

  • Just an observation that I made this year is that the SA has been noticeably absent from most of the places around here where they are normally set up.

Another thing I've noticed though is that so many of the stores that I shop in are doing donations to different charities. ie: At Borders you can buy a book and it goes to underprivileged kids or at my grocery store you can make a donation at the check out. Stuff like that actually works out better for me anyway because I never carry cash.

I know here the SA is having a hard time finding volunteers. They were actually surprised I called out of the blue to help. Maybe it has something to do with their political views? See my grocery store isn't doing that and that is a good idea. I wish more charities actually did get out more, but here, they do not. I had to actually google volunteer experience just to find charities in my area.

Yeah? That's really great. I wonder how many companies actually do that?

  • It might have something to do with politics. I'd actually be really interested in finding out what's up with it.

It is cool what my grocery does. They do it for many different charities too. In October, they raised a lot of money for Komen and then in November it was feeding hungry families over Thanksgiving and now they are doing Christmas stuff.

Off-topic from people charities, but my local Petco now does this thing where I can round up my total and they give the extra money to their pet charity and to the rescue that operates out of the store. (Where I adopted Baby G!) It's so easy and I never miss the money...I wish more places would do things like that.

That's really cool. I like to pay things in even amounts too cause I hate change. I would love that.
  • Salt, that reminds me- I go to this big, chain liquor store near me, and one time I was buying beer and they asked me if I would donate $1 to children's cancer research.  I almost said no, but then I told the cashier I'd be kind of a jerk if I spent money on beer but not poor little kids with cancer.  Well played, liquor store...
    image
  • We don't have a petco here :(
I have been thinking of getting some balls (lol) rolling here. I want to do a Meals on Wheels type of thing but I don't even know how to start.

I see your points now. I was just taken aback by the SA comments because I saw the good stuff they do. And it's odd that I am defending them b/c I am a hardcore Athiest but I also have a huge heart for the homeless.

I've seen SA out in lots of places around here - they're at each door of Kroger too - so there's no way of getting away from them. I never carry cash though, so that's good. Now I wonder where you are in MS...I want to move there to get away from all these damn bells.

I'm talkin' about the Kroger in Flowood! I never go into Jackson though...so there might be quite a few places around there without SA folk. H works off of 55 and Northside though and mentioned seeing a SA worker at the Kroger by there. Maybe the SA folk are stalking Kroger and no where else....

Maybe I need to stop going to Kroger so much lol. And Kroger in Flowood has a thing where you can add a few dollars to your order and it goes to charity!

*shrugs*  My company makes a big deal about it every year to remind us all to enroll, but the matching gift is the only perk they offer.  Todd's company goes pretty far in trying to get their associates to contribute...they get actual perks themselves for donating a certain amount.  They get lunches, dress down, parking perks, and other little things to encourage them to donate, on top of the matching donation that the company makes.  I think it's pretty awesome.  He works for great people.
