DIY Chat :D

I think I've seen a few mentions around here about DIYing invites and such, so here's a post where we can chat about it!

I had a sad DIY moment today.  I thought I was going to finish my first fingerless mitt today, but I was SO STUPID and used a "lace" cast off, which is supposed to be stretchy but is the total opposite.  The edge is super super firm and RIPPED APART when I tried it on!  So now the whole edge is shredded and since I used mohair yarn its pretty much impossible to un-do and fix (mohair likes to stick to itself, the fibers practically felt or fuse together).  Luckily, I found 1 last skein of the super-white-not-ivory yarn at the shop and should have enough to make 2 more mitts and hopefully my clutch too.  I might need to unravel a bit of the busted one to make the clutch, if it decides to cooperate.

Ugh, 3 weeks of work down the drain.  This is why I started so early!

:( Sucks that your mitt broke. At least you started early enough to redo it. :)
Glad I started early on everything too. It makes it sooooo much easier. I'm DIYing my entire wedding pretty much which is including: invites and response cards, website, bouquets, corsages/boutonnieres, altering my and my BMs dresses, card chest, and food. Pictures to come of some as they are finished... (this will take a while)

I know we had said some but what is everyone else planning on DIY?

  • I can't really do much DIY until the month before the wedding, because I'd have to ship everything to my parents house...too much work. BUT when I get there, I am planning on doing some chalkboard signage using chalkboard paint...something like this: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lvhi97wUSb1r6ahc3o1_500.jpg

I'm sure there will be a LOT of trial and error!! ;)

That's a cool idea. :) have fun with it. I chose to do any DIY that didn't include me handwriting anything because no one can read it. :P

  • I am DIYing fabric pomanders for the ceremony, a cake topper, a monogrammed aisle runner, my New Orleans themed favors, and programs so far. All the projects are started but only my aisle runner is finished so far! I'll post pictures as I get them done!

We DIY invites! It was a lot of printing and cutting and they probably aren't perfect but they are more like what we were looking for than anyone we talked to could do. We wanted Kraft Brown paper invites and that's what we got!!

I'm also probably DIY jar decor for centerpieces before we take them to the florist. We'll be tying on different fabrics and such.

I'm hoping to DIY some signage for the wedding but haven't started yet and we are in the process of cutting our own tree slices for potential centerpiece things and a large one for the cake stand.

It's definitely a lot of work and with just about 8 months left I'm already feeling pressed for time lol I've been hoping time would fly by but now I'm sorta wishing it'd slow down a bit!
Best of luck to you and yours!

</div><div>Ahhh I love the idea of Kraft paper!!! How did you end up printing everything?! I'm curious to know, it was something I thought of doing once but it seems like so much work!

  • We printed at home. It probably wasnt the most cost effective way since we had to buy ink though we did get it on sale. I created the wording using paint.net software and just printed on the Kraft paper. Then I borrowed FMIL's big paper cutter to cut out everything. I was able to fit an invite "set" on each sheet of Kraft paper invite, RSVP, info cards. I think kinkos or somewhere similar will print if you bring in a document as well.
Best of luck to you and yours!

I have hope!  We'll be seeing FSIL next week, and she is much more advanced at knitting than me, and her MIL is even more so.  Maybe between the 2 of them, we can fix it!  And the second mitt is going fast, I could totally make an extra if I needed to.

Haha, yeah I'm not DIYing invites either.  I love DIY, but I refuse to make 50+ of anything.  I'm still struggling to find a nice DIY project I can make 4 times for BM gifts!

  • Good luck with your projects, everyone.  They sound great.

I've decided to DIY my veil.  I found some lace on etsy that looks nearly identical to that on my dress, and will get a couple of hair combs and some french netting or tulle.  I think I have the design figured out, but will probably tweak it a little.

I thought about doing invitations, but I've heard/read too many horror stories.  We may order a pdf and have them printed online though, because it's cheaper.

  • I am also doing my invites myself. I have having all my printing done at kinko's mostly because their ink looked much better on the paper we wanted than my ink from my home computer. I am also going to be DIY table numbers, centerpieces, escort cards, menus, programs, signs for the wedding, and my garter. I am also thinking of doing a fingerprint tree myself. Right now I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by everything DIY and other wedding tasks in general that need to get done.

Tigergirl: I love your aisle runner! I can't believe you did that yourself! It looks great!

I hope everyone else's projects are going well!
