Birth Control

Hey everyone! I'm getting married in June and I'm just wondering what has and hasn't worked for you. I know everyone's body is different and i DO plan on talking to my doctor, going to the Gyno and all that good stuff. Just curious to know what you all have used and how it effected you physically, emotionally...etc.

[QUOTE]Hey everyone! I'm getting married in June and I'm trying to figure out what kind of birth control I want to take. I'm planning on taking the pill, I just have no idea where to begin looking for the best kind of birth control to take. Any advice, suggestions? Thanks! Jess

Start by talking to your doctor. She may try out some different ones until you find one you like.
  • Yes... Go ask your doctor this question. Internet strangers don't cut it when making decisions about your health.

  • Your OB/GYN is the best and only person you should talk to about this.  Getting medical advice on the internet is really not that smart.  Birth control affects everyone differently, so even if I have had a great experience on mine you may just have a catstrophe with the same kind.

  • Different people have different experiences on different pills.  I can tell you what's worked for me, but it might not work for you.  Your best bet is to see what your doctor recommends.

Personally, I really like the pills where you only have 4 periods a year.  However, I have two friends who got pregnant while taking them and neither found out until about 10 weeks (due to not missing periods), which is really late to be making lifestyle changes (all three of us have dangerous jobs).

There are also some pill-like forms of BC that don't involve taking a pill every day, like nuva ring.

You'll also want to know what your insurance will cover because BC can be expensive if it's not covered by your health plan!

  • Since only a doc can prescribe BC to you, you should talk to your OB/GYN about your best options when you go there for your physical exam.

  • I already plan on talking to my doctor, I was just wondering what you all have used and what has/hasn't worked for you. I'm not stupid enough to let total strangers "perscribe" a birth control to me. Just curious to what options are out there.

We can only respond to what you post.  We can't read your mind.

As everyone has said, different bodies react differently to different BCs.  Your doctor knows your medical history and will recommend something. </div>

<div>No one said you were.  In any event, a total stranger couldn't prescribe anything to you, unless they were licensed to do so.  I take BC, but I take what my doctor prescribed me.  It worked for me, so I never had to try different ones.  That may be the case for you.  It may not be.  Either way, telling you my brand will do little to help you when you see your doc, "An internet stranger takes reclepsin" isn't going to impress the doc.</div>

  • Wow. I come on here with a harmless inquiry and I get bashed. I don't need you to be rude. I'm sorry if you think it was a stupid question for me to ask, I was just curious. I know that my doctor knows what's best for me, and I plan on taking whatever birth control she perscribes. I'm not going to tell her how to do her job. However if someone has had a really bad experience with a certain kind of birth control, I would want to know so that I can express than concern to my doctor and talk to her about it. Again, I know everyone's body is different and everyone's body will react differently, I know that I need to talk to my doctor which I already have planned on doing, and I know I don't need to take the advice of strangers on the internet.

  • I think everyone's point here is that you cannot just listen to anecdotal evidence on birth control.

Do some research yourself first just to get an idea (from some legit websites).

There's hormonal methods like pills, patches, nuvaring, and certain kinds of IUDs

    There's non-hormonal methods like a diaphragm or non-hormonal IUD

There's fertility observed methods like the different kinds of NFP and FAM

    ETC...

Lots of options... do some research...then of course, talk to your doctor about all your options.

I will also add that your doctor has lots of wisdom and knowledge, but you as the patient should also present your concerns and research to make sure that you're finding the perfect fit.  You're the one that has to use it.

Because you are asking a really dumb question, then broke into hysterics when people gave you a very sane and reasonable response. It doesn't speak well for your manners, emotional development, nor capacity to care for your own health if you think talking to your doctor is such aweful advice.

And I was also told by a few different people that it was stupid for me to be asking people on the internet about birth control. Plus a couple of smartalic remarks about going to the doctor armed with medical advice i got from the internet.

Many of you have not been rude and I appreciate you taking the time to actually answer my post politely.

  • I was on the Depo shot for 10 years and loved it. I did gain a significant amount of weight
(about 20 lbs) but at the time I weighed all of 95lbs so the weight gain didn't bother me. I did not get a period the entire time I was on the depo. Over this past summer I switched to the Ortho tri cyclen pill because the longer you are on Depo the longer it can take to get pregnant after you stop taking it. I hate it. The first couple months it made me nauseous. Then I developed a fibroadenomas in my breast. It is a benign lump that can be caused by hormone changes. I ultimately had to have surgery to have it removed. I also hate having to remember to take a pill everyday. Those are just my experiences and you should definitely talk with your doctor to find out what is best for you. You may have to try a few different kinds to see what works best for you. Everyone is different.

I will tell you this. I've been on pills and currently an IUD. I like the IUD better. I did have a bad acne reaction when I first got it but that has since subsided. Not everyone will react the same way. I switched to IUD for medical reasons. It really depends on how your time of month is- is it painful, heavy, non-existent, etc. Based on these your doctor will decide what's right for you. With my IUD I don't get periods at all. If you prefer to not have any you should ask about the different forms of IUD and the benefits/cons for each different one. Some women still like to get their periods because it's natural and (usually) a good way to tell you're not pregnant. If you prefer to continue to get your periods, you may want to look into a pill form. I don't know anything about shots, so I can't tell you anything about that. Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • To be completely honest, the posters who ask

"What should I get for my bridesmaids? Do you think the monogrammed tote is overdone?"

    OR

"Ugh my FMIL is giving me a headache about her guestlist! What should I do?"

    OR

"Where's a good, rustic barn venue?"

All get the same type of responses as you got - short and blunt.

We have to assume that you only know up to the extent that you post and aren't thinking about more than that becaue there are brides out there who have nothing between their ears but some lukewarm air and a few dust bunnies. Stick around, lurk for a few days, then you'll get the hang of how it goes. The more info you provide, the more intelligent we presume you are.

AND don't take any of it personally - we don't know you and we aren't judging YOU, we're judging YOUR POST - see the difference?
