where do I start?

WOW...I got engaged July 3rd while we were watching the fireworks on Lake Gaston.  What a beautiful night!  I am already feeling rushed

Re: where do I start?

  • Congrats! That sounds awesome.

First of all I would take some to just enjoy being engaged. Once you start looking and planning it's hard to go back and just enjoy. Once you are ready, start thinking about when and where you would like to get married, then search out venues. Once you have your venues secured everything else will make a lot more sense. And of course whenever you run into trouble or have a question or a vent, please come and well shall help you!

    Happy planning!

  • Agreed, enjoy the next few weeks and the excitement and well-wishes. The first question we got after telling people we're engaged is "when's the wedding?" um...don't know, we've been engaged for two hours.

That said have you guys discussed timing, locations, thoughts? Sit down and do that in the next few weeks so you have a general idea and then work your way through the knot's checklist, I actually found it really helpful.

  • First pick the time of year, general location (where you live now vs. hometown), and maybe the feel.  Then look at venues for both ceremony and reception.

Other things that can book early are photographers, caterers (if not a part of the venue), and DJs.

  • Congratulations!  Being newly engaged is so wonderful :)

My first step was to figure out our budget.  We didn't want to fall in love with anything we couldn't realistically afford.  The knot has a useful budgeting tool that can give you an idea of how much you should spend on each vendor.

From there, you can determine your guest list.  As catering is the largest chunk of your spending, the easiest way to stretch your budget is to cut down on the guest list.

After you have your budget and guest list determined, you can start venue shopping.

    Happy planning!

  • Welcome to the boards!

    0) Pick a date
    1) Figure out what your budget is
    2) Make a schedule
    3) Research and look at venues - go to your local board for help
    4) Determine your guest list
    5) From your budget allocate what you and your fiance are willing to spend on catering, decor, venue, dress, etc.

    And ask lots of questions!

  • Thanks ya'll.  We have the venue and date.  Todd took care of that before he proposed.  May 21.  This website is great...just overwhelming!

Holy Cow he's fast!  The knot checklist is a really great tool for letting you know where you should be in the planning process, but don't get too stressed if it tells you you're behind schedule, you'll be fine.

And my parents have a house in Henrico!  *fistbump*

  • Congrats!!! My FI told everyone we were going to enjoy it for a few weeks and then make plans, little did he know that I already had the photographer, caterer and location!

Seriously though, look around, get some magazines, and get a feel for what you like, and try to envision what you'll want to see when you walk down the aisle.

Take a week and enjoy it!

  • Congratulations!
I would agree to just enjoy it for a little while before jumping in to the planning. We've been engaged almost a month now and it's a super exciting time! I've been researching some but we haven't started the actual planning just yet. That's awesome that you already have a date and venue! I'm thinking those will the most stressful, so you can skip to the fun stuff! :)
  • Congratulations!!!!!!!   Agree with most PP - take time and enjoy!!  I took 4 months to enjoy being engaged before I looked at a thing.  Best decision I could have made!!  Since your venue is already booked you can take a little time to relax and be happy before the planning mania starts!!!

  • Thanks!  I am trying to take it slow and enjoy but everytime I get on the internet I HAVE to visit The Knot!  There are so many things to look at.  I think I only slept 4 hours last night because I got into looking at dresses and hair!

  • oh gabbyjo and this is just the beginning!

Since you already have a venue you need to start looking at making a guest list making sure you don't over invite for the venue!  That and the budget :)

    ps we are date twins!
