NWR: What the hell is wrong with some people?

I am on my way back to school right now, on the 5 hour train ride that I paid $65 for.  I paid extra for first class which includes free food and free booze, better leg room and assigned seating.

Anyway, the seats are priced like an airplane - better seats = more money.

I paid for a good seat.

I get on the train, and there is a guy sitting in my seat.  I politely say that I think he's in my seat, and he just stares at me like I'M the moron.  I said again, you're in my seat.  He got angry and told me to sit down at the back, it's not assigned.

Thinking maybe I was wrong, I find a shitty seat (rear facing which makes me sick) in the back, and when the lady comes to see my ticket, she looks confused because I'm suppose to be up front. I said to her: "Is it not assigned seating, because someone is in  my seat." She said it is and asks him to move.

She's about 10 feet up from me, and I can hear the man in my seat YELL at her.  "I'VE BEEN IN THIS SEAT FOR 4 DAMN HOURS - I'M NOT MOVING." The woman and this man go back and forth for a few minutes, and she comes back to me looking upset saying he won't move.

He actually refused to move and the lady was so floored she didn't know what to do.

So here I am, facing backyards, getting sick from the nausea, on a 4 hour ride, stuck at the back with the smell and sound of the washroom.

FML.

I'm calling head office tomorrow. This is actually a joke.

  • Wow. I would be SO incredibly pissed off.

BUT, I dunno what the head office can do about an asshole in your seat. I mean, the lady tried to get him out, and it's not like he works for them. Although, this might get them to think about hiring security.
  • The lady working there needs to grow some balls.  And you should have gone to someone as soon as you got on the train, rather than wait for her to come check tickets.

  • Ditto Kiki.  Go show him your ticket and say that yes they are assigned seats.  I don't understand how he can tell you and the lady working that he belongs in that seat when clearly you have the ticket.

  • Agreed she needs to grow some balls. But at the same time she tried to stand her ground - he's a legitimately crazy 200 lbs man in his 50s and she's a 100lbs woman in her 20s. Her next resort would be to call the cops, and that would just screw up everyone's day by making an emergency stop, waiting for the cops to get on and diffuse the situation.
Also, there was no one around when I sat down. They checked tickets through the cars.

This is great!  And I definitely vote for getting your ticket refunded or a credit for the next time (if there is a next time)

[QUOTE]I know this really isn't the same thing at all, but it reminds me of the last flight I had.  The person sitting next to me was very overweight and honestly took up at least 1/3 of my seat if not more.  There was no way I could have put the arm rest down, and I was frustrated because I paid for a seat just like anyone else and was super uncomfortable the whole flight.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I really don't know if there is anything that can be done in this situation, and honestly I felt bad for the other passenger because I'm sure he felt bad and was uncomfortable as well.  If this has happened to you, did you do anything?

  • People are punks.  Seriously.  I would request your money back.

  • That seriously sucks.  I would call the train company and ask for a new ticket since they weren't able to honor your first class ticket.  If they don't, I'd report them to the BBB.

Also, if you do make a stink, I would raise the question of what procedures they have in place for difficult passengers.  I take a commuter train everyday and there was a woman not too long ago who was cursing up an anti-Semitic storm (on a train with a heavy Jewish population) and the conductor didn't really know how to handle her.  I think they should be trained on how to deal with difficult passengers.
  • I would have gone Chuck Norris on his ass.

    Ditto
  • Quite frankly I'm surprised they don't have some kind of transit cop or security that can handle these types of things.  I bet this guy wasn't crazy, he was probably just a giant assh*le.  He's probably done the same thing on different trains, and each time nobody actually said "move your ass or get arrested, buddy" so he continued to do it.

I would definately get your money back, and I would inform the head office that they obviously need to either get some better training for their employees, or have some kind of security on board or available at short notice to deal with people like that.

It has happened in the US - various airlines have policies that either say if you can't fit in one seat you can't board or that if you don't fit you have to buy two seats (the result is the same, just different wording). It's crappy, I agree, but I don't see why I should have to give up my seat that I paid full price for because another person is too wide for the seat in the same way that I wouldn't accept someone else's carry-on stowed in my leg space.

The guy on the train sounds like a crazy. After reading the OP, I was going to say you should have insisted, but if he refused to move after being told by the train staff, it's not like you insisting would have done much good. Call and complain til they refund you.
