HGC Diet (please no one try this) I just thought it was crazy

So yesterday I learned about this diet called the HCG diet.  Pretty much you take drops or a shot from you doctor and stick to 500 calories a day!  I guess people lose a lot of weight, but you can do that by starving.

Anyways later that day I was in GNC and I saw it on the shelves.  I asked the girl that worked there about it.  She said it does work but pretty much you are starving yourself.  You take the drops and eat maybe 2 apples a day and that's it!

She then pointed me over to some vitamins and said they were a much better way to lose fat. I was very happy to know that the people in our local GNC aren't pushing it to customers and explaining how bad it is for you.

I'm sure though many will try it, it's definately not for me.

[QUOTE]Actually the hcg diet is really safe as long as you have self control you can do it. BUT you can NOT excersise while on it. I am on the diet i eat an orange in the morning 20 mins later take 10 drops, in the noon i eat 3.5 ounces of chicken & 1 1/2 cup of broccolie cooked in chicken bouyon take 10 drops 20 mins later, at night ile eat 3.5 ounces of flamigon and a whole onion take 10 drops 20 ins later, & drink PLENTY of water. You can have as much coffee as you want and a gtablespoon of milk & stevia as your sweetener i stay full all day.

So, let me see if I understand. You're ingesting 500 calories a day, plus AS MUCH CAFFEINE as you want, so you're not fueling your body properly plus you're jacking it up.
Yeah. Know why you can't exercise on it? Not enough fuel in your body to burn, and I'm guessing the potential for heart problems.

ANY body needs a minimum of I believe 1200 calories to function, even sedentary. The BMR calculator, using my height (5' 6.5"), my weight (150), my age (43), and using a sedentary activity level, says 1633 calories. Check it out.

I did a 500 calorie a day diet - for 2 weeks. It was liquid, and it was preparation for bypass surgery. I'm still eating more than you are now, post-op. This diet is ridiculous.

  • Like i said on a previous thread concernming the HCG diet, we are all adults here and everyone considering any diet or exercise program should do the research for themselves, consult their doctor(that's what we pay them for)  and make there own decisions.  I mean who knows your body better than yourself.  And for seriously overweight ppl I'm sure the health risks of being overweight far outweigh a low calorie diet.  And for the morons going crazy over someone's spelling (which i am very anal about, i might add)  stick to the point of the thread.  If you are so smart, you would have known what she was talking about anyway.  What was your point in bringing this topic up to bash or to help??? I thought this website was for brides wanting to help other brides.  I know a doctor who has done the diet and swears by it.  Just my two cents...Go HCG, lol

Given the number of spelling/grammatical errors in your post, you can't possibly be that anal about it.

But here's the thing: people really DON'T know their bodies that well. If they did, there wouldn't be any kind of market for the hundreds of fad diets (including hCG) out there.  No one here is arguing that you won't lose weight on hCG--you almost certainly will, because of the calorie restriction. It would be pretty much impossible for anyone NOT to lose weight on 500 calories per day. What we are trying to say is that the diet is fundamentally unsafe, and the hCG part of it (be it drops, pills, injections, whatever) has not been proven to make it any more safe--it's just a way for people to make money off of desperate people. The FDA has even declared the "drops" version to be fraudulent.

The idea that I'm not trying to "help other brides" is insulting--I'm trying to help them by convincing them not to try something that could be deleterious to their health. If a woman posted about her successful weight loss due to intestinal parasites, I would try to convince others not to try that as well. I call that being helpful.
  • We do want to help other brides...by telling then that ANYBODY who tells you that 500 calories a day is a healthy and viable option is a quack and does not have your best interests at heart. I don't care if the person is a nutritionist, a doctor, my father, or the pope. HGC diets are not a good idea. Period.

Last I heard, one will die from starvation faster than from being overweight.

This post isn't even worth two cents.

And finally, it's their not there.

  • My mom actually did this diet for a couple of weeks.  She lost 14lbs.  She said it was really difficult to do on the 500 cal/day.  You're not meant to do the diet more than like 28 days max or something like that.  You do a maintenance plan and those that need to lose more, go back on it for another cycle.

I'm not approving or disapproving of it.  Just wanted to pass along the info I was told.  Obviously, this is somthing that you can't do long term, even if you wanted to.  If you had THAT much wilpower, then you've got the willpower to go on a regular, sensible healthy diet and exercise plan.

Can you please post his/her name and location so that we all know who NOT to go to?

By any chance, did that doctor get his/her degree from the University of Phoenix?
