F/U Women in the Military--A female former-Marine's rebuttal

Just read this, and thought it was fantastic.

http://jezebel.com/5885445/an-ex+marine-explains-why-military-women-shouldnt-expect-to-be-raped

Best line:
"How she criticizes "feminists" for supporting sexual abuse programs because the military exists "to defend and protect us, not the people who were fighting the war," speaking as though those of us who serve are expendable sub-humans sent to do her dirty work but not worthy of the same protections she receives."

ETA: should be "former" not "ex." as far as I can tell she was not dishonorable discharged.

  • Most civilians (including me, before FI joined) don't know the difference between ex and former.  But I'm glad she shared her views!

  • I'm glad she was able to share her views.

DH has always said he wouldn't take an opinion of the military seriously unless it came from someone who served.  I think Rick Santorum and Ms. Trotta are very good examples of why he feels this way.

<div>I don't actually agree with that. The framers were quite specific to make the President a civilian position rather than a military one. My issue with Santorum is that he doesn't know what he's talking about and wants to be all good ole boys about it. Have an opinion Senator, you should make yourself aware, but to be all vehement that you're absolutely right about the culture of the military without serving is where the problem lies IMO, not with civilians having opinions about the military at all. </div>

I'm not referring to whether the President should be a military position or not.  He has plenty of advisors to help him when making military related decisions so he's about as educated as it gets.  I'm referring, specifically, to people like Santorum and Trotta who think they can make a judgement about the social climate of the military without having been there.

ETA:  DH is more referring to the "if you want to be a good sailor do this" or "everyone in the military acts like this" comments he has gotten in the past from people not affiliated with the military.
