Borrowing Cake Serving Sets

Hello! Quick question...

If your not at all interested in the 'nostalgica' of the cake serving set (which I'm not), is it appropriate to 'borrow' from a friend (This friend is my MOH). I'm just not interestest in spending $40+ on a item that I will probably pack away in a box.

Does this sound Ok? I guess i'm worried about borrowing something that is really precious to her. What do you think? Is your serving set precious to you? how would you feel if a bride asked to borrow it?

Just use a regular knife that your caterer has on hand. It does not have to be a special cake cutting set. I think the sets that you buy are a waste of money. Especially since you never use a special set to cut any other type of cake.

We just used servers and knives that the venue had, and champagne flutes too. Those are all items that you definitely don't need to spend money on. There's nothing wrong with borrowing or using what your venue/caterer has on hand.

Borrow away. If she's okay lending it, then definitely use hers. I think that most of those "one use" things are budget busters anyway. Cake servers, toasting flutes, aisle runners....just not necessary enough to spend $$ on.

We used the knife and server our venue provided. I'm so glad that we didn't buy them. We used them for all of 5 seconds. Definitely borrow it if she offering to lend it to you.

Totally borrow it. My sister bought a simple pair and tied a ribbon in her colors around them; I'm borrowing them and switching her ribbon for a ribbon in my colors. If you're worried about them getting lost, talk to your caterer and make sure they're stored in a safe place and you get them back at the end of the night.

I wouldn't even bother borrowing. I would (and did) just use whatever the venue has on hand for cake cutting. I never understand why couples feel they need to provide this cutlery for their wedding -- it's just bizarre to me.

I'm borrowing my mom's. I think it is actually flattering to ask to borrow, not an imposition. Then again I am in the minority because I WANT a nice cake server, since my mom uses theirs every time she makes a cake, which is a lot.

However, I definitely don't think it is necessary to buy that just for the reception. My parents' was a gift to them for their wedding.

We bought ours. We were able to sell it after the ceremony for the same price we bought it for. But if you've got an easy way to borrow one, that would be even easier.

I say borrow. My mom asked me to use the one she used in her wedding. It belongs to my grandmother's best friend. My grandmother died when I was 11, but her best friend has been at every family wedding before and since. She was basically a surrogate auntie for my mom and her sisters. My mom used her set, and she cut the cake for my mom. She is doing the same for me. This is the one piece that still exists from my mothers wedding, so it is an honor to use it in my own.
