My brother who is in the wedding cannot make my wedding (ugh). The program he is in will not let him out of his committment and he is across the country. We are not replacing him for another groomsman and I still want him to be considered in the wedding. How do I word this on the wedding program?

You could just list him as a groomsmen, people will figure it out when there are more names than guys

I agree with PP that you can still list him as a groomsman. I don't like the idea of a picture of where he should stand because to me that is a memorial, he is not deceased....just absent.

Also avoid the term 'honourary' as that also indicated deceased... don't want to give people the wrong impression about why he's not there

Groomsman: Reg183's Brother (currently doing X in Y location)

Just list him as a groomsmen in the program. People will figure out he was absent. I like PP's idea of, "___ is in X doing Y" so everyone knows. I don't care for the picture/stand idea so much.

Any kind of memorializing type stuff (photos, empty chairs, etc.) will make it seem like your brother is dead.

I think it makes most sense to give him a shout out during your reception toast. Express how much you love him and what a great brother he is and how you wish circumstances weren't keeping him across the country on this special day.
