What are you making for New Year's Eve/Day?

I plan on going grocery shopping in a few days to get everything we need for New Year's. What is your family's tradition?

I was thinking about doing a pulled bbq pork in the crock pot, but need some recipes. I think there was a thread about this a while back, and I can't find the recipes saved on my computer at all. Sorry.

Re: What are you making for New Year's Eve/Day?

  • My husband is making steamed mussels. Yum.

  • Nothing! We're drowning in leftovers and cookies. Seriously, there are like 8 dozen cookies left, and we've been pigging out all week.
  • We don't really have any traditions.  We got invited to a "Hangover Brunch" at a friends house NY Day, but... I don't know, we should come up with something good.

  • We're hanging out with friends for NYE, so I think we're doing a heavy apps potluck-ish thing.  NYD we're going to FI's mom's house to do Christmas with them, so I have no idea what we're eating then!

Waiting to meet the baby broccoli on 5/5/2013!
  • Going to a friends house. Also doing pot luck thing. We'll crawl back to our house on NYD and I'll probably sleep all day.

  • Ugh, nothing, I don't cook and I know he won't lol. I have work until late, anyway, so I'll probably pick something up on my way over or something. Chinese food, most likely lol.

  • we always do finger foods. mr.owl loves deviled eggs and these things called armadillo eggs. it's a jalapeno pepper stuffed with cheese wrapped in bacon. the guys do them on the grill. sounds terrible to me but they love it.
my personal favorites are pigs in a blanket and mini brownies. mmmm.....
  • I have a Crock Pot recipe at home, but I can't remember how I do it. This one looks good: http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/slow-cooker-pulled-pork/Detail.aspx

We're having neighbors over, so I'll probably make some apps (meatballs, store-bought Spanakopita, a some kind of cheese dip are the leading contenders right now). And I'm making White Russians and maybe dacquiris.
  • georgia - yeah, I saw that one, I just might have to try it if I can't find anything better. Thanks. I could of sworn I had one, but don't know what I did with it.

In my family, we usually had ribs. MIL always makes pork loin and sauerkraut. I just wanted to do something a bit different & start our own tradition this year.
  • Last year, we didn't plan for food on NYD, and we ended up having to eat Chinese, because everything else was closed. I didn't mind, but my H doesn't care for Chinese.
  • I made mac and cheese for Christmas, and made Christmas breakfast, so I figure my holiday cooking quota for the year is done.  I hate cooking.

  • I love cooking, but often find myself at a loss for recipes. I find it helps keep my mind off of things going on in my life right now.

We have a new year's eve party every year with a huge variety of apps. Some standards (tons of shrimp, 7-layer dip, pigs in a blanket, hummas and pesto with pita chips, tons of cheese and crackers, etc.) and then we mix it up for the rest (a turkey last year, we've had bacon wrapped dates, canapes with boursin and fresh herbs, this year I'll do a smoked salmon/dill cold quiche and I think a couple briskets or London broils). We usually make about 20 or so apps and then some people bring more.

The only new year's day tradition we have is bloody marys :-)  What goes with them varies. In this area, pork and sauerkraut is a new year's day tradition, and DH has made noises about doing that, but I've told him he absolutely can't make that unless I'm away for a few days. I despise pork and I can't stand the smell of cooked sauerkraut.

Last year, about 15 or so people from our new year's eve party were still at our house for breakfast and one of them had brought a breakfast casserole so we threw that in the oven, added a bunch of rolls, I made some coffee, DH made bloodys, and we all hung out around the fire for most of the day. I expect this year will be similar.
  • Lobsters are usually on sale at our local grocery. So we order up a few of those - yum!

  • Well we're going out to dinner with my parents and family friends, which has kind of become a tradtion of sorts. Then we're hosting dessert this year, so we are making a flourless chocolate cake we have a recipe for.

NY Day H has plans to go hang with his mom, and they are making soup. I hate when he springs this stuff on me. like Happy New Year, I'm going to stay at my mom's, I'll see you tomorrow. Hey thanks for the invite. So I'm going to do some baking since we didn't get much of a chance to for Christmas. And maybe find a couple recipes to make for Sunday's football game. We're kind of broke so I'm defintiely raiding the pantry to see what we have already LOL.
