Is this what you were talking about?http://www.thestar.com/Article/305918A FB friend just posted this. He's ultra-con and lived in Canada for a few years. An argument is starting, and it's getting gooooood.

• That is weird, the commercial I saw featured a woman, but it was almost an identical story. And it wasn't just a Youtube video, it was on television. Share the FB fight! Let's all get enraged/laugh and laugh at this guy together.
• OK, but it's gonna take me a bit to bring it here, you can't c&p directly from FB for some reason, it effs up.

• I apologize if this is wonky:"Joe": is Conservative, because we can't all be on welfare!Me: Amazing, I manage to be neither! "Mary": I work full time and still can't afford the cheapest health insurance option I can buy in New York State. My sister works full time in Nebraska and supports two kids on her own, and though the kids get insurance thru the state, she doesn't. Nor can she afford to buy it. How is this a sustainable or just situation for our country to be in? I'm not blowing my money on crack or Manolo Blahniks or even a nice apartment. Explain to me why the government can't help make insurance possible for me and my sister."Joe": Mary: Allow me to explain!http://www.thestar.com/Article/305918My favorite part of the article, this little tidbit no one seems to understand! "That's because private health care is outlawed in Ontario. Under their single-payer system, only the government can pay for medically necessary care."Whatever could this mean? It means, that even if you have the means, you are PROHIBITED BY LAW from paying for care! The Government is the only one who can pay for your care...wow, I really want my Government to take care of me! Campaigning for Universal Health Care as a "core Democratic principle" might be how you win elections. Implementing them without knowing what you are doing, is quite another."Joe": Unlike many of our fellow citizens, I've experienced Nationalized Health Care, and it SUCKS! I lived in Canada for 3 years. How many people marching to the beat of Nationalized Health Care have ANY idea what they are talking about? Can't afford a nice appartment, or Manolos? You'll be even less able to if this becomes reality. Canada has ... payroll tax near TRIPLE what we pay, 15% sales tax, 100% Liquor Tax (this means that nice $60 bottle of scotch, is going to cost you $120!) and smokes are $12-$15 a pack."Joe": My point is, the government is not the solution to the problem...not at ALL! Believe me when I tell you, most people who are clammoring for this, aren't going to get what they think they want! 4-5 year wait for a primary doctor sound GREAT to you? 4-5 hour waits to go to the ER sound fun any time of the day or night? 8 months for an MRI to see if the brain tumor is cancerous sound great? Believe me, Canada is far worse than the US regarding Health Care! You love to travel out of the country! How would you like to have to pay out of pocket for a special policy for travel, because there is no such thing as out of network care! I could go on and on and I'm sure I won't change your mind...but I know, nationalized 1 payer care is not the reform we need!

• 4-5 hour waits to go to the ER sound fun any time of the day or night?Where does this guy live?  I've never been seen in less than 4 hours in the ER unless I couldn't breathe.

• He's a propaganda spewing machine. All of his updates are like this. It's weird. I used to work with him about 8 years ago and he was NOT like this at all.

• His argument about Canadians biitching about how much they are taxed is ridiculous.  Just about everybody biitches about taxes.  It doesn't mean we don't appreciate what the money buys.

• we want to make sure that we don't end up with a situation where only rich people get good healthcare. The point is not control, it's equality.I'm trying to picture living in a country that supports this. It's breaking my heart that I just can't. I was listening to NPR this morning and they were talking about Obama's plan, and the douchenozzle representing the conservative side kept making arguments that boiled down to "Me and my rich buddies are happy with the current system, what's your guys' problem?"

• Uh, "Joe," I have "good" insurance and I waited at least 6 hours in the ER when my gall bladder was on the verge of exploding. In Berkeley, California. So...yeah.

• Another genius response from one of his friends:*2 thumbs up* to ***. I can name 10 people I know who, just within the last year, have come to the US for healthcare. 3 of them for maternity care for various reasons. And as of this very second, I have 4 separate status updates from friends complaining about Canadian health care. Doesn't sound all that lovely to me.Oh the funnies. Holy crap, you know 10-15 people who don't like Canadian healthcare!? That MUST mean it's terrible! Also, you don't think that the status updates on FB have anything to do with the current, highly publicized debate on the subject? And exactly NP. When I was taking care of my little sister, we were in the ER a zillion times, and yes, we had to wait several hours on a number of occasions. But one time when we brought her in, they could see right away that she was in serious trouble, and they had her in a bed and receiving care almost immediately.
• There are some things about the Canadian system that I do not like and really no country's system is perfect so you can expect that there will be complainers. I don't have a family doctor. I want a woman doctor so I am bit more picky and would have one by now it I didn't care if I had a man. But that doesn't mean I don't have access to treatment. When Joe was sick last month we never once had to wait for anything. The only bill we got at the end of a 3 day stay was $45 for the ambulance ride and my works supplemental health insurance paid for it in full. Do we really pay 100% liquor tax? I find that impossible to believe. Also, I do not for one second think that we pay more tax then the US. Friends of mine who live in the US are paying the same amount of tax that I am (yes I know it varies by state, it also varies by province up here).Perhaps people only look at it from the perspective of their current situation. So if they have good coverage from work or if they don't really pay all that much for their coverage or they aren't using the healthcare system. BUT what about it that changes. Can they afford the premium's and bills if they were to get sick and say not have a job or if their parent falls ill and is retired. It doesn't seem like people are thinking long term with their arguments.

• Bobthie, did you say anything else to him, or are you just leaving him to dig the hole of his own stupidity?I wish I had more FB people to fight with. Everyone on my FB only has updates about what they ate for lunch or about how they are "so excited to have the day off, and going to the park!" I need to look through some political FB groups and add some friends.
• One of the biggest (if not the biggest) contributor to the health care system is taxes from tobacco and booze.   It seems fair to me that if you're consuming crap that deteriorates your body, then you should be taxed for it. And I like both, so there.
image
• I don't understand why it's so hard for people to have empathy or compassion for situations other than their own.Or, like Bobthie pointed out, why is it so hard to look ahead to a day when they might not be young and healthy and relatively well-off? But I guess these are the same people who made a mess of the stock market and mortgage industry.

• Totally butting in, but regarding private health care in Canada: In Alberta they have approved it.  I lost my doctor as of last month.  I can continue to seem him for 3k a year.  He says he's only taking on 500 patients and that day or night you need him he'll be there.  I don't see the doctor enough so not something I was willing to cough up.
