always fondant

Every ad in every magazine shows a cake with! My fiance's aunt is making the cake and refuses to make fondant because she says it tastes bad. Does anyone know of any alternatives for a cool looking outer layer?

    We are doing either modeling chocolate, chocolate buttercream or a poured ganache on our cake. Even good fondant is bad (IMO) and we want our cake to be GOOD. The modeling chocolate will give it a smooth look, the ganache is hand poured though and can not be made to look perfect. We maybe ok with this though. we want delicious over perfectly beautiful.
