Nontraditional registries?

Hey all,We don't want to register at the traditional registry places (Crate and Barrel, Target, Macys, no dept. stores).  Does anyone have recommendations on other places to register?  Is there a site that allows you to pull in items from various stores and/or more of a wishlist site like honeyfund but a catch-all site where you can put anything?Any suggestions helpful--thank you in advance!

Re: Nontraditional registries?

  • There's always Amazon. But be careful with non-traditional registries. They are a turnoff for a lot of guests because they can come off as either a shakedown for cash or fund my hobby type of thing. A lot of people won't contribute or buy off these registries on principle (me included). The question is, what are you looking to register for? It may be better to follow the standby advice of don't register and hope that people take the hint and just give cash.
  • You can register at amazon, but remember that a lot of guests won't be comfortable shopping online.  You should do at least one brick and mortar store.  If you don't need homegoods, you could do REI or a sporting goods store, or Home Depot/Lowes for home improvement.
  • My Fiance and I registered at target and macys for the people how are more comfortable with a traditional gift. We also registered at TheHoneymoon.com  Many of our friends will probably branch out and try a new registry idea.
  • Make sure you register somewhere - a friend of mine didn't (she was hoping to just get cash to buy a house) and ended up with some really, really random stuff.  (Not that she wasn't grateful, just stuff she would never use)Amazon is great.  We were so sad that Lowes/Home Depot didn't do registries, we really need tools/yard stuff for our new home.
  • I would pick one 'traditional' registry.  It can be small, but if you don't grandparents/older relatives are going to go out and pick out stuff you will never use, not give you a gift receipt and then you are stuck with it.  Pick a place, put 20 items on it, so that can at least go get something you will use.  Maybe you would like a new set of dishes because you bought cheap ones or whatever. My cousin registered at Home Depot for her wedding a few years ago.  They had just bought a house and needed all kinds of stuff.  A friend of mine did a honeymoon registry - there was mixed reviews about that.  I know you said no department stores but somewhere like Sears you could go as far as registering for large appliances...they have tools, lawn equipment, TV's, yet still the dishes and bedding that are normally on them.
  • My FI and I each had our own place already before we met, so since I sold my place and moved in with him, we now have 2+ of everything- 3 sets of plates, 2 sets of silverware, 2 blenders, etc.  I think it is totally stupid to have to register for MORE of this stuff, just because it's what people want to buy.  However since his family insisted, we are registered at Bed Bath and Beyond.  We are also registered at REI, for stuff that we actually need and would use.  I agree with other poster who doesn't see why it's tacky to get us a tent so we can go camping and enjoy each other's company doing something fun, but it is totally acceptable to get us ANOTHER set of plates which we will likely never use.
  • you can register for honeymoon items at thebigday.com.
  • We didn't do a traditional wedding registry and it has worked very well.  We had no need for new things (we've both lived on our own since college 9 years ago) so we registered for donations to two charities that were important to each of us (www.idofoundation.org) and also had a honeymoon registery (www.thebigday.com).  The charity registry has gone over SO well and we are happy that we are able to support our favorite charities in such a huge way.
  • My FI and I have lived together for 5 years now and my sister is throwing my shower and did not include registry info on the invites but rather added to the RSVP line: For more info and to RSVP please call by >........ so that when she speaks to people they can ask and we are hoping to get gift cards to lowes, best buy, sears, etc since we have purchased an older home which will need new appliances and remodeling. I thought it was a cute idea. We are also hoping to get some local grociery store gift cards to use for everyday expenses. I wasn't even really interested in having a shower since we have been together for so long, but I thought the idea of a gift card shower was kinda neat. and all of our friends and family love it since we live way out in the country and they can get the gift cards right at Wegmans for like 50 different stores. No trips to the city!
  • We made our registry on www.myregistry.com and it's gone over really well.  You can put anything from anywhere on there (including items that might not be online).  Everyone's been fine with it, and no one has had any complaints.I think the whole do you register for house stuff or not thing really depends on you and your guests.  In many places/families, it's not a big deal to put something like camping gear on there and people understand that that is what you like and would like to have and use (this would be the category we fall into).  In other places, people are more traditional and think it's only acceptable to get housewares and stuff when you're married.  Do what you think is appropriate for you.

  • we did nto register, and did not end up with useless stuff.  we got 95% cash adn gift cards.  the few gifts we did get were wonderful items that we never would have gotten had we registered. (a homemade quilt, for example).
  • Hehehe- we got a kayak from my parents as our wedding gift.  My dad even gave us a little speech about the similarities between boating in a two-seated kayak and marriage.  It was our favorite gift and it is something fun that we can use together.  We loved it.
  • aftertheweddingday.com is perfect place to registar with if you already have most of your household items.... for my sisters showers we simply wrote down a line that talked about how important it is to spend quality time with your new husband/wife and to please help the newlyweds love life together even more.... many of the guest loved this and loved hearing about how the gift was used to create a nonforgetable memory
  • We registered at the usual places like Macy's and Bed Bath & Beyond but we also registered at The Pampered Chef. My friend is a consultant who has been doing it for a while and everyone seems to love it!
