What now? (PIP)

So, I started on my card box yesterday. Quickly realized I'm not a huge fan of the damask wrapping paper I bought from Target, but proceeded anyway. Exhibit A shows the unadorned box, and if you look closely, you can see what a shoddy job I made of cutting the opening:So I thought, ok, I've seen pictures where there's a 'matting' to the opening, I'll just do that. But I apparently may not have the right scissors to cut ribbon w/o fraying it, or I just suck at it. Plus I feel like this would look funny. I'm clearly not remembering it right.Beyond that, I'm not sure what to do to dress it up. Obviously I can slap a ribbon around it:...but could it use a little something more? Yes. Do I know wth that might be? Not really. I was thinking maybe of finding some black wrapping paper and doing the bottom half in black and breaking up the damask/black halves with the red ribbon. Suggestions? (I'm not above redoing the box entirely if need be - though I should clearly stay away from any complicated crafting!)

PS - this is more what I had in mind for the damask pattern I want:This box is available at Michaels, and for now I'm resisting throwing up my hands in defeat and just getting it w/a coupon. Even though it doesn't have any pretty red.

I'm so not a crafty person so I truly applaud your efforts. I'm the girl who would just say screw it buy the box from Michael's. I'd rather spend a few extra dollars than mess with arts and crafts. Hopefully the craftier ladies on the board will have some advice for you. Good Luck!

You need really sharp scissors and cut at an angle to help so that the ribbon will not fray. You could also bend the ends in and glue them so that they are nice and smooth. You can see a picture of mine in my Bio. Kind of the same concept.

If you end up buying the box from Michael's - could you replace the black ribbon with red ribbon instead? That way you'd have your colors incorporated?

To make the edges of the box look more crisp, you can run your thumb and index finger along each edge to crease it.  Good ol' Martha Stewart trick for wrapping gifts :)

Maybe you could stalk a few together.  This one is pretty (available on ebay): or something similiar with a red ribbon:Or instead of wrapping the ribbon around the center of the box, you could wrap around the the corners.  This isn't a pretty picture, but if you did hte ribbon like the box on the left, it would frame your card opening nicely.

Thanks for all the helpful tips guys! I could definitely try to replace the black ribbon with the red, if I were to get the Michael's one. hkiesling, those are really pretty! I may have to look that up on ebay...I'm not sure if I'm crafty enough to pull it off myself. I think I'll give it another try (I need to fold in the edges of the paper around the slit, as someone suggested, so that means redoing the whole thing probably), but we'll see how long before I just buy one :)

http://stores.ebay.com/THE-WEDDING-MAIN-ST It looks like it's in the $100 range, although you could always just put a bid on it and see what happens.  I think you could make one for WAY cheaper though.  Maybe a DIY project for the GTG?

$115?!?! F that noise. I'm a total ebay idiot, but I don't see a place to bid for that one - are some items 'buy it now' only? Yeah, it's either Michaels or DIY. GREAT idea to have that as the GTG project, I hope I can make it!!
