Cultural Crossovers!

I was thinking about this earlier and I'll put it out there - is there anything special about your culture that your FI enjoys? Music, food, clothing, etc.

I'm West Indian and my FI is Italian - we enjoy each other's food tremendously. He loves oxtail and rice, curry chicken and okra and I adore gnocchi, sausage and basically any  stuffed pasta.

The music thing is touch and go; it's not like I'm going to start listening to Opera but FI is pretty into mainstream reggae - definately not the underground stuff I like.

Where's your cultural crossover?

    This is fun!

FI loves my families cooking, but usually sides like macaroni (we do it differently that the American versions), peas and rice, pates, dumb-bread.  He doesn't like the stuff I LOVE, like saltfish, boiled green banana, red peas soup, kallalloo.

I still try to be polite and stomach the food here, I just prefer my food with a little more, um, flavor (no offense to anyone).

He doesn't like my music :(  He thinks it's just noise.  I'm a bit more ecclectic and will listen to anything except country.  But if I'm in the mood for music from home (Virgin Islands) or other Caribbean music, he gets upset because I like to blast it.

I think the biggest cultural difference is that my family gets together a lot more than his does, and when we do, there is always music, games, and lots and lots of dancing and jokes.  He really likes that (he doesn't participate in the dancing, but likes watching it).  He says he really feels like part of the family, and I really like that.
  • FI loves my mom's cooking, ackee and saltfish, bakes, brown stew, etc. I like the type of food that his culture eats because it is typically the same. Red/Black beans and rice= peas n rice, yuca=cassava. lol sweet plantain. Notice I didn't say the food his family cooks. I 'm just picky about who I eat from I've seen their cleanliness (or lack there of)Frown We like some of the same music, the late 80's early 90's.

The thing we do disagree on is TV. He just does not like any of my shows ie, grey's anatomy, missing, and scandal. I mean come on! I am not that big of a sports fan(soccer/football) but I will watch it with him at least. Oh well if that is all we disagree on its not bad.

We both enjoy the food, to an extent- I'm vegan so the stuff his family makes that is Italian typically is not, although I make a great eggplant parm, homemade pizza, manicotti, etc...he LOVES my empanadas and my sweet and sour, the peanut noodles are also probably one of his favorites too. He even likes some stuff that I didn't particularly like as a kid like jai and jook. (I'm mixed Puerto Rican and Chinese.) He isn't quite as used to rice in a meal but I'm working on that, lol- I grew up eating rice several times a week and now if I cook it twice a week that's plenty for him.

As far as our family get togethers, my family is way bigger than his- I have eight siblings, four neices, one nephew...it can be overwhelming at first but we're a welcoming bunch! And they freaking love him so that makes it even easier. His family is a little different, a bit quieter or more reserved, and their parties always seem a bit more organized. I mean, ours have TONS of food but his does actual courses. (He's Italian-German.)

We pretty much just try to keep an open mind with most other stuff- I wound up liking country and metal music and LOVING football and he let me introduce him to anime, graphic novels, and a serious love of cats!
