How do we feel about this?

Re: How do we feel about this?

• If you swallowed something you wouldn't even have to opt out of the body scanner, it doesn't use enough radiation to even see much beyond skin level.

That being said I don't really mind the scanners...as long as their is some accountability, like random non-TSA audits to make sure faces are still obscured in every scan and they asre not being saved. I know they'll always find another way, but I want those darn terrorists to have to swallow something huge and uncomfortable to blow me up, not just be able to wear it in a bra.
• I'm fine the scanners and whatever other safety measures are put into place and I've flown pretty often recently. At least a few times a year to visit my sister in NY and on my honeymoon this year. I don't really think about worst case scenarios either, but I could see how someone who doesn't fly would be concerned.

• Oh, and just about every time I've flown I've received one of those "we rifled through your bag to check it out" notices in my checked baggage, so apparently at least with me they look carefully at checked baggage because I don't pack particularly suspicious-looking bags.

[QUOTE]I'm just glad that I decided to fly on Thursday morning rather than Wednesday evening. I don't care how you feel about the scanners, it's mean to do the opt out protest on the busiest travel day of the year. I feel less sympathetic to protesters when they pull stunts that are inconvenient to the innocent/uninvolved.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: How do we feel about this? : Cosigned, me From the very little I've seen of this being discussed on here, it seems like a lot of the people who're saying that they're fine with the measures and prefer safety are people who don't fly often. I realize that's a total generalization, but I do think there might be a correlation - I fly a lot, so it's just a normal part of my life and not something special where I'm thinking about worst case scenarios.

Yeah, I fly a lot too, or at least I did before FI and I moved to the same place, so it's definitely a concern for me.

• Frankly, I'm perfectly fine with the body scanners, but I say that from the standpoint of one who LITERALLY every.single.time. I fly end up being the "random invasive pat-down" that the x-ray or whatever picks. Every time. It gets old real fast when some four foot tall moron is grabbing your boobs in front of her grinning, man-boy coworkers, let me tell you.

I'd much rather someone look at a basic outline of my body on a screen than grab my boobs and put their hands inside my waistband every time I try get on a plane thankyouverymuch.

• I fly a lot and am okay with the measures :).
• Without there being a protest (yet), we're all already talking about the issues. There are a lot of ways of getting the public's attention that do not involve causing a bunch of people to miss flights to visit elderly family members in different parts of the country.

I don't love the security stuff. I've definitely brought on more liquids that I should or even small knives in my carry-on (not intentionally, but when I realized they were in my bags, I knew how the screening process works well enough to know how to avoid confiscation of my stuff), so I know how crappy the system is. I travel a lot, and the security itself isn't what slows me down, it's the infrequent travelers who don't know how to deal with security and are surprised that they have to take off their shoes or don't know to put their laptop in a separate tray. Can we have an idiot line in screening?
• Let me add that I'm not one who's all for fear-mongoring safety measures, which frankly, is exactly how I see at least half of the precautions that have been taken (on our flight from OR Tambo to Heathrow I got a chapstick taken away from me because it was in my pocket - it's not a liquid - and a woman in the row next to us was freaking needle-pointing on the plane. Um...?) but I do prefer body scanners because they're not all up and hands on my personal business, if that makes sense. I'd rather you look at it than touch it, but that's just me.

• In Fort Lauderdale, they randomly put people in a line to go through a puffer test. Literally you stand in a box and it puffs air at you and then analyzes the air for explosives. Its weird. I don't recommend doing it in a short flowy skirt.

I saw somewhere that there are pasties you can wear for the x-ray machine. I may try to get some for our honeymoon (this time next week), just as a joke for FI. I don't know if Austin has these machines, though.

It's because you're hot. And, if it were to happen in the future, I'd insist on being taken to a private room, and having another female "officer" as a witness. I'm fairly certain that you can at least demand that.

• MP and Matilda, definitely not saying only people who don't fly are ok with this, I just noticed that several posters I'd seen saying things like "well I'd rather be scanned than blown up!" followed that with "and I never fly anyway." I feel like thinking that you're going to be blown up goes more with people who don't fly often, whether because they avoid flying for that reason or just because they don't have many personal experiences with problem-free flights to balance out the news stories.
• Gotcha Emily. That makes sense, too. When all you know are news stories and don't have a personal experience, I could see how it would look like every flight could be your last. For those of us who fly, it's just what it is. You get scanned and all that jazz and you land safely and don't feel the need to cheer when the plane touches down.

• I don't mind the full body scans - I think men care more about other people seeing the size of their package.

I do think, however, that the liquid restrictions are bullshit. Being a chemist, I can name several powders off the top of my head that you could explode just with a bottle of water you buy on the other side of security.

• I know I'm late to this, but I'm with those who said I'm fine with the body scanners. I'm also fine with the pat downs too though. I just had to get one a few weeks ago when I brought H to the airport, and it really wasn't that bad. My choices were to either take of my hoodie to go through the metal detector, or get a pat down. SInce I had no bra on and a practically see-through tank-top underneath, I opted for the pat down. It took 5 seconds, and they made a female TSA worker do it. I would much rather have that added security, even if it is solely for piece of mind.

I have also been selected for the extra search plenty of times on flights, and thought it was ridiculous since I knew I wasn't carrying anything and they were picking me over someone else potentially carrying something. But they have to do their job, and if that means searching me more then so be it.

And my checked bags have been gone through plenty of times. They go through an x-ray machine and are inspected, and if they need to the open them up. That's why checked bags are not allowed to have locks on them anymore. Many times I've opened my suitcase to find my things rifled through and the papers inside saying TSA search and whatnot. I just feel bad for the people who search them on my way home from a trip when its full of dirty clothes and underwear.

• I agree with whoever said and airplane's a pretty safe place to be right now. Your chances of dying in a terrorist-crashed plane are, based on the history of commerical airlines, 1 in 30 million. Your odds of dying from a radiation-induced cancer after a single backscatter scan are, freakishly enough, 1 in 30 million, according to a recent MSNBC expert interview.

So no, the risks of the radiation aren't high, but if they're equal to the risks of terrorism, then whytheflyingfuck are we doing this? And by this I mean the scans, the patdowns, the liquids, the ten-minute scrutinizing of a holographic gum package label before one of my recent flights, and the theft of my friend's electronic equipment by a TSA agent. I don't feel any safer.
• Personally, I think we're giving up too much of our freedoms. I don't want to be felt up or photographed practically naked because there's a 000000001% of my getting blown up on a plane, and the terrorists will likely figure out how to get explosives on the plane anyway. Or just go blow up a shopping mall instead.

See now this doesn't sound too bad. I literally get the "Random search. Please put your hands on your head, spread your feet, take off your shoes (I had to take my fuucking socks off once?!)" and then like, cupping of boobs and grabbing of under-bum. It's awful. This one woman (in Halifax which is like, the teeniest airport on the planet) was hassling me about the underwire on my bra. She was all running her fingers over and over under my boobs going "and what is this?" and I'm like "it's my bra...?" and she would not let up, I had to be like "It's got a goddamn support wire under it, do you not wear undies?!" (well, I only said the second part in my head but you get it).

ETA: I understand the reasons for pat-downs, but there's a difference, in my mind, to a pat down and an invasive rub-down.

• Opal, good point. I've had stuff stolen out of a locked bag before - with the locks on the TSA can open - not to mention the way the rifle through your things and leave everything totally disorganized when I've packed specifically to protect any fragile items.
• Charlie once went through security wearing a T-shirt, and had a TSA agent repeatedly run his hands over Charlie's BARE arms. Now, I know Charlie has hot arms, but really.

I have to fly on Friday, and I'm now thinking that I'm going to go with as little clothing as possible (T shirt and skirt, bare legs) and opt for a pat down if I have to choose. We'll see what happens.

The invasive kind. A bladder-cancer survivor just yesterday was publically humiliated when they broke the bag that catches his urine. It apparently soaked him and the TSA agent. That must have taken some amount of force in the crotchal region to break that thing.

The TSA agent actually broke the seal around the opening near the stomach. But I don't think that makes it any better (this was just for clarification that his family jewels were not groped like that) because he told the agent what it was several times and asked him to be careful. That should not have happened.
