Higgy- Pet Question (again) :)

I was brushing one of my cats and he has big mats (he has never had these before.) I found a place online that has a tutorial on cutting them out, but I am afraid he is going to look crazy. Should I give him a bath and try to work them out with conditioner? Leave it alone? Try cutting them out myself or take him into a groomer (he also hates the car so this would be the last option. LOL)

My "little" kitty gets fur mats hardcore during the summer.  I usually just cut them out and he looks slightly bald for a couple weeks.  He's a long hair though so the bald spots are really apparent.  LOL!

I cut chunks out of Ray all the time. He gets a little patchy but it doesn't look awful.

Haha... you can do it!!! They also make these "brushes" that are called rakes... basically they are just a wooden handle and then they have two rows of spokes basically.... those are AMAZING for getting out even the worst mats. I'm excited for the FB pictures. :)

Oh- PS, I wouldn't give him a bath until the mats are out. If you give him a bath with the mats in there, water will get trapped and it will really irritate his skin.

Just be very careful! I have a Persian so he gets matted very easily. I used to cut them out next to his skin and have cut him a few times and he never even flintched. Now i cut them through the middle and brush the rest out. They are much easier to brush out if you do it that way.

Yes I read the cut in the middle and then comb part on a website, I just dont want to make him bald! We have a brush like that higgy but apparently it doesnt work on the mats he have. I feel like a bad kitty mom for letting them get that bad!
