Greedy??

We are getting married in August of next year.  However we have been together (living together) for some time now.  We really didn't plan on registering for gifts since we have the basics.  However we are in need of some big ticket items like a refridgerator.  How do we get this idea across to our guests?

Re: Greedy??

  • I know Home Depot and Lowes offer registries, however I am not a fan of them.

If you don't register people will most likely give you money. So why not put that money towards a refridgerator and some of the bigger tickets items you want?
  • My friend registered for gift cards to LOWES since they were remodeling.  Could you register for some items and then also gift cards ate SEARS or wherever you want to get the refrigerator.

  • do not register.  you will get money.  ffamily can also discretely spread the word.
  • Ditto Missy.  If you don't register, many guests will just give you money.  Of course, they might also just give you whatever trinket they feel like giving, but that's the case even if you do register.

You could tell your mother and MOH that you're saving up for big-ticket items so that if anyone calls to ask they can let them know and hopefully your guests will take the hint.

But I don't know if I'd register for a refrigerator or any other gift that is so big and expensive (unless you do a hidden registry so that you can get the completion discount).  How on earth would someone wrap it and bring it to your reception?  :P
  • With these Mica!
I would totally roll into a bridal shower with a refridgerator.

  • KJB is on a roll!

H loves all that As Seen on TV stuff.  We have so much stuff that Billy Mays used to hawk.
  • I agree with PPS--use some of the money you get. I would definitely side-eye someone registering for a refrigerator or other big-ticket items that are really best left off a registry.

  • I would do a small registry or no registry, and when people ask about where you are registered, have your mom/MOH/whoever say "they are registered at X, but they're really saving up to replace some appliances, like a fridge."
  • I was at the mall yesterday, and they had one of those As Seen on TV stores.  I had to go in.  I didn't find anything good :(  I wanted to get my friend from work a BootyPop.

  • How could you NOT find anything good in an As Seen on TV store?!!?!?  I mean, between the Samurai Shark and the Slap Chop everything in between, there must be loads of fantastic junk.

    For your enjoyment:

Off to BIL's house.  Merry Christmas all!
  • We have one of those As Seen on TV stores at the mall here, too. H and I went in it when it first opened and didn't really seen anything either.
  • I've never seen anything I really like at the as seen on tv stores, but we're also anti unitasker, which most of them seem to be. Although I do have the magic bullet blender for my office at work, that thing is amazing.

hmoore, do you really have nothing you could register for? even if you have the basics, I'm sure you could use new towels, sheets, etc.? There's nothing wrong with your mom or moh mentioning when asked that you're saving up for new appliances, but I definitely wouldn't put it in writing anywhere. But some people like to give tangible gifts, so should definitely leave them the option. Just keep the registry on the smaller side.
