NWR: Working out

Does anyone else feel like working out hurts them more then it helps? Ive been running 2-3 miles 2-3 times a week for a year and a half and every time i do it i still am sore and ache afterwards. Does that make any sense? I starting to get tired of being in pain all the time. Any one else have this issue?

YES!  I've found that switching up the routine - walking, getting on a stair machine or elliptical, or anything really helps.  This way you aren't overworking your muscles and joints and they have time to recover.  Try going for a walk 1-2 days a week or, if you belong to a gym, getting on a new piece of cardio equipment.

are you warming up and cooling down afterward? because not warming the muscles by stretching or a slow pacing before you get up to speed will cause pain. as well as not cooling down with stretching or cooling down my slowing pace or waking because the blood will pool in the muscles and causes acheing and pain...so maybe a short cool down session..i dont really know if this is apart of you routine now but it helped me....

I agree with the other advice here - make sure you're cooling down and stretching afterward.  I don't stretch before but afterward for me is key to reducing stiffness and soreness.  If I don't stretch afterward I can barely move!  Also, make sure you have the right running shoes.  Get fitted at a running store (like Charm City Run) - they'll watch you run and recommend shoes based on your gait.  See if all that helps.  Finally, as much as I hate to say this it could just be that running isn't the best exercise for you and you may need to try something else.  Some people, like me, just don't tolerate running very well no matter the shoes or how much they stretch afterwards.  I HATE running (find it really boring) and my knees hurt all the time from it, but I still run 3 times a week and put up with being in mild pain all the time because it's really good exercise, and also because I hate all other forms of exercise even more!  But you might find something else you enjoy and that won't hurt you.  :)

Thanks girls for all your imput. I am running with a group out of annapolis with certified coaches etc. I have the correct shoes, but i am NOT stretching afterwards- so i'll try that and see it if helps. Plus i'll also try mixing it up with different exercises etc. I do belong to a gym - big vanilla in Arnold.   Thanks so much!
