We have TVs in our lobby and the big news on CNN is that their reporter got tear gassed, lol.  That's what you get for standing in the middle of a protest!

The irony of the protestors chanting at the police "disobey your orders" is just laughable...aren't they ordering them to do something lol.I feel bad for the lady reporting on WTAE, she sounded near tears for awhile.

I am so curious about the sonic cannons!  Are they just really loud?  Are they high pitched?  How can a noise cause temporary vision loss?  Fascinating!

From what they have been blaring on TV they seem pretty loud and piercing. I just finding it kind of sad that the police are shoving people off of the street. I mean I understand that they have to keep the people safe but some people actually do live in those areas and walking in the street isn't illegal yet. And as long as prtests aren't violent I just don't understand

Elisha, I mostly agree.  The right to a peaceful protest is something I value and enjoy about the US.

I agree with peaceful protests - look at the Tibet protest march from Schenley Park this morning. They got their message out without causing any problems. But, the pics of the people in Lawrenceville doesn't look like something that will remain peaceful. I hate to say it, but it is better for the police to step in BEFORE major problems happen, rather than try to staunch it once it's started. Riots feed on themselves.

the anarchist group does not have a permit that allows their protest to take place-that is part one of the issue.

Maybe I'm missing the violent parts, but I know how the media works they very rarely miss the violent parts, and this latest "protest" they are showing is not violent. They have already brought out the SWAT truck these people just have bull horns.

Was the Tibet one a protest that had a permit?  I haven't been following this too closely, but it sounded like the one in Lawrenceville didn't have a permit and that's why they told them to move.  The one where people were rolling a garbage bin was just scary, I'd be worried someone would get hit with that (police or protestor).

Well I do have to agree that riots aren't a good idea. nothing breeds more bad ideas than a big group feeding on a bigger group of dumb ideas and angry people. Maybe there is just some peacful hippie burried in me that wants a good peceful protest and no scary riot gear

They were flipping dumpsters and removing glass bottles that they were then taking with them. Many of those unauthorized protesters had their faces completely covered (except for their eyes and mouths). It's pretty easy to read their intent.

I think when people show up with masks on and chant things like "Tear it down!" (when they were being held in the park), it makes people really nervous that they might not remain peaceful for long.

The ones with the dumpsters were obviously headed to do some damage. Groups like that put a bad name on protesting. what happned to protesting with your voice and with simply sitting in the right place peacfully to show that you won't stand for something that you don't believe in?

The dumpster ones weren't in Lawrenceville though were they?  My guess is that they are stopping sit-ins displays in streets w/o permit due to the security and transportation concerns?  I mean so many roads are already blocked off, what if there was an emergency (even just an ambulance that needed to get through) and it wasn't able to because there were protestors and riot police blocking the way.  That's just my thoughts on it though.
  • edited December 2011
The dumpsters flippers are the same ones from Lawrenceville, so the police have a reason to act this way, since it already turned violent by them flipping the dumpsters, grabbing glass bottles, and throwing rocks at the police. The protest was originally blocked because of a lack of permit, then they dispersed and started causing trouble by flipping the dumpsters, etc.

Thanks N, I wasn't sure if they were the same ones or not I was switching between news broadcasts and I was only getting tidbits of each.  DH's former coworker was working across the street from the Boston Market and bank where they busted in the windows.
