Reception + lodging better together?

I'm thinking about where I should have my reception.  I'm having the ceremony at my hometown church, but I don't want to have the reception there because they don't allow alcohol beyond 1 champagne toast..

So, here's the new question:  Is it better to have my reception at the same place as alot of out of town guests/ members of the bridal party are staying (ie a hotel, resort, or b&b?).  My fiance's entire family, think 20+ people, will be traveling a solid 5 hours to my hometown for the wedding and all will need to stay in a hotel for the weekend.  I'm just wondering if it would be more convenient or better to have the reception at a Sheraton or something as opposed to a country club or golf club that doesn't have lodging attached?  Thoughts? Personal experiences?

Re: Reception + lodging better together?

  • We had our reception at the hotel where everyone stayed...  It was very convenient for everyone to just walk up to their rooms at the end of the night, so I highly recommend it.

Also, you should get discounted room rates for your guests in exchange for having the event at the hotel.  Everyone wins ;)
  • We have lots of out of town guests... probably 75% and wanted to have the reception where everyone would be staying but didnt find anything we liked.  An alternative that we found useful was having a shuttle for before and after the wedding.  Not only is it convenient for anyone not wanting to drive but we really dont want any drunk drivers.  Just a thought as an alternative if you dont find anything you like at a hotel or a resort.

    Good Luck! :)
  • Lodging is a big reason why we changed wedding destinations.  Our original plan meant that people would either have to pay upwards of $200/night to stay close by, or find the cheaper hotels at the other end of a windy mountain road.  At night.  After people have been drinking.

They don't necessarily have to be attached, but they should be as close together as possible for the convenience of your guests.  For my friend's wedding, I really appreciated being able to walk from the hotel to her after-party (the reception wrapped fairly early) and back, because we didn't need a designated driver and could all enjoy ourselves.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Thats what we are doing and we don't even have that many out of towners! Our wedding is about 45 min from where everyone lives so it definitely works out for people to stay there after drinking and I think it will be a lot of fun!
