Look at mortgage calculators from a few different banks, including the ones the calculate "How Much You Can Afford" and figure out where you want to be. Figure out your wishlist for your house, then using that and realtor.ca, find some places you kinda like. My best advice for finding a realtor to work with is by recommendation. You want someone good in the area you're looking in. I would also suggest going through a mortgage broker for your mortgage. Our broker is freaking fabulous (quite literally, he's flamingly gay) and has been a huge help. Be open minded when you go into a place, but if you don't like it, move on. Our real estate broker said to us that when you find the house, you get a feeling, and usually pretty quickly (kinda like a wedding dress I guess!). Good luck, and have fun!
