Do tealights need to be in holders?

Our centerpieces are going to have tealights surrounding them. Do we need to buy holders for the tealights? These are cheap so I'd probably get them if necessary: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00114167Do you think they're necessary? As in, they'll start a fire if they don't have the holders?

Not if it's the kind that have either plastic or metal containers with them. I prefer the plastic, looks nicer.

I would but that's just me. Check with the venue too since they may have a requirement.

Tealights will get prettymessy without holders as the wax will spread as it melts.I wouldn't advise it, sorry

we had tealight holders. 10 mins into the reception, my boss's husband placed his cloth napkin on one of the candles. yeah. the venue pulled them all off the tables! stupid tealights.
