How did you pick your flowers?

This might seem like a silly question, as i'm sure most people have a favorite flower, but i am a very ecclectic person and like so many different things that i have a hard time narrowing down a favorite. When i ask my fiance for opinions he shrugs, says "they're flowers" and then he told me to ask our 2 year old son, who proceeded to tell me he wanted every single flower i showed him. i'm thinking that i'm going to do artificial flowers, and i'll probably end up doing them myself so i need ideas.. i thought about making each boquet and each arrangement different.. the bridesmaids bouquets in their favorite flowers/ colors, and then for centerpieces have one for the important women in our lives, (our moms, grandma's, etc..) and then they could take them home at the end of the night. i just want it to look nice and not like a total hodge podge of a mess like i made them in the dark.. anyone else have this problem? and/or how did you pick your flowers?

What color are your BM dresses, and when is your wedding? How many girls do you have? One way to make your idea not look like a mess, is to pick flowers that are all sort of in the same color family or theme. Or, the same flowers, but in different colors. Each girls bouquet could be all one type of flowers. For example, you could have each girl carry a different color of brightly colored gerbera daisies. Or, you could pick primary colors... one girl carry red roses, one girl carry blue irises, one girl carry daffodils. Or, all roses, each in a different shade.

I am doing artificial flowers also. The girls are carrying different colors of the same flower and I have NOOOOO idea yet what flowers I will use! I have a feeling it will take me a while to decide!

I love hydrangeas, and my mother lives on Cape Cod, where they are everywhere in the summer. I chose my color scheme around that blue and green. I am getting married in July, so they are also seasonal. I am having a very small wedding party, so I was able to get hydrangeas on my tight budget. They are a very big flower, so I will have 3 blooms in my bouquet, along with white roses. My sister will carry two blooms with green roses. Look at flowers that are in season at your wedding date. Roses are always in season, and I think gerbera daisies are too. I think it's important that you ether pick a common flower for everyone. or a common color scheme. Don't forget that candles can make great centerpieces too! I would only do artificial if they look very real! Good Luck!

i did this too! i wanted the chocolate dresses w/ the fall yellows, reds, oranges, and a little green and pink showing in the overall bouquet. i went to michael's at the end of last fall and got a ton of awesome flowers for like $50. ended up getting some stuff in the spring too to lighten the colors up - baby yellow roses and some orangy pink ranaculous. I just picked stuff that i liked. my favorite was an orangy red japanese magnolia. i just picked stuff i like and then tried to round out the colors and have a good variety!

I love tradition. So, I chose flowers that meant a lot to my family (roses and hydrendgas, with artificial lily of the valley in my hair) and my husband's family (snapdragons). Luckliy all of these were in season, which helps keeps the cost down. That's why although it was important for me to incorporate the lily of the valley, I used artificial for them.

I made all my flowers for my wedding using artifical.  I was able to find light purple roses that complimented my deep purple bridemaid's dresses.  Just go to your local hobby store and I'm sure you will find something you will like in the colors you want.

I was in a wedding once where each bridesmaid had a different flower, all in red.  I had red tulips, another had red roses, red gerber daisies, etc.  Each groomsman had the corresponding flower, so the groomsman that walked me down the aisle had a red tulip bout.  The bride carried red and orange colored flowers (she was going for a sunset colors theme) and the centerpieces where the same flowers as her bouquet.  Honestly I do not remember what her flowers were, just the colors, but it all went together without matching and it looked great! How I personally picked my flowers is I saw a picture on The KNot of a purple bouquet that I loved, I showed it to my florist to see if these particular flowers came in my colors, they did, so I went with it!

Just go to a bookstore & look at bouquet books...you'll get plenty of ideas there!

I looked at my colors. They are an aqua, lime/apple green and black and white accents. I tired to find a "signature" flower to carry throughout all the bouquest and then aded things that will compliment. I found the white anemone (which is black and white) and fell in love. PIB under decor. There are no "aqua" flowers so I knew I'd need to accent w/the green. We decided to go w/orchids and hydranges. Stay away from using too many different types of blooms.

I like anemones too, and poppies with the dark centers. I'm having trouble with my colors, my other half's only suggestion was that we had dark dark blue, and that we dont have pink.. we're getting married in July, outside, in ND.. so our surroundings are going to be sky blue, grass greens and shades of gold.. then of course lots and lots of white.. as the reception is going to be in a quanset thats completely draped in white.. (sounds weird i know but its cool) so i need a lot of color to offset that, and i dont want anything thats going to look drab outside i think i'm having more trouble with wedding planning than most.. i didn't dream of white floofy dresses when i was a little girl.. everyone got a very unfair head start on me lol

I plan on making origami flowers... they will be personal, last forever, and can be absolutely any color (or even patterned). There are several really nice origami and kirigami flowers that don't even look like paper from a distance. A lot of people immediately shoot down this idea, thinking it sounds tacky, but Google it or search origami on offbeatbrides.com and you'll see some really nice bouquets. Good luck choosing!

given the description of your venue, i think fake poppies would look awesome! the orangish/red would look great against the sky and the fields, and the white. if i were going with the poppies, i'd probably do all poppies, though. simplify.

i like the red contrast with the outdoor setting.. but i gotta figure out how to make the centerpieces and stuff inside avoid looking like a candy-cane themed christmas party haha www.joyhaven.com is our venue.. i already know i'm going to need to get some colored linens and chair covers

Oh yikes!  I see what you mean.  LOL.  Maybe poppies and sunflowers, or poppies and black-eyed susans.  Add some yellow into the mix.  If you use red, another way you could break up the color a bit is to add a different contrasting color underneath the centerpiece... just like a square of fabric (kind of like what they have set at each place in the picture...)
