Chairs for the ceremony

Ok...... So I just got an email from my beach vendor saying the price of chairs has gone up. My dilemma is that the raise in the cost is going to make putting chairs out for everyone around $500.....this is almost double of the original price and they literally are plastic beach chairs no covers. If I get an outside chair rental company I have to get another permit and its one more person I have to depend on to set things up... Do I spend the money for the chairs? Do I only have a fewc chairs for parent, grandparents, sibblings and make the rest stand? WDYT!? Opinions please! TIA

Re: Chairs for the ceremony

  • Do you pay by amount of chairs they set up or is it one price for all? Silly question I suppose - but if the price goes down for only a few chairs - I would do that and have everyone else stand.

  • It is 10/chair...we are doing a short and sweet ceremony at most 25 minutes. I feel rude telling people they have to stand but as of right now we have 50 family members who have already bought their plane tickets, who knows could be more!

  • Yeah - I would only pay for chairs for parents, grandparents, and anyone else who can't actually stand! Tell people they can bring a blanket to the beach to sit on.

  • I have been to a lot of beach weddings, and living above Magens Bay, I see tons of weddings on the beach and nobody ever has chairs.  The ceremony's are usually so short that most people can't justify spending that much money on them.  I would say for your grandparents to get them since it may be difficult for them to stand the entire time but other than that, and maybe your parents so they don't feel left out I would have the rest stand.
  • I would tell them that you find that price ridiculous and maybe get a quote from somebody else to see if your original vendor would match it.
  • My thought is I probably could buy plastic chairs for that much its a waste to spend that much on chairs just for 25 min or wte!! We are considering doing like 6 on each side for parents grandparents and our god parents....maybe that's what we will have to do. I have just haven't seen a wedding where people stood and didn't know if it was rude to make them stand for the ceremony

  • My only concern about only renting some chairs is that some people might make a fuss about having to stand.  Also, things tend to run longer than planned and guests might get uncomfortable with standing.
  • I swear I just posted a reply to this thread....... weird. Well, this is the same delima I am having! However, the only vendor on Catalina Island that rent's chairs like this for events is $10 / per chair with a minimum of 20 chairs. I'd only NEED 4 chairs for elderly guests ~ but I think it's a bit expensive to pay $200 for a 15 - 20 minute tops ceremony. These chairs, too, are the plastic beach chairs. If I could buy my own and bring just 4 along with us on the cruise ship, I would. Fat chance huh?!? I also dislike the fact that the vendors on Catalina Island are able to charge the amounts that they do just because they know they can since they're on an "Island". What a rip off!
  • Shelli- could you see if the cruise ship would let you borrow the 4chairs from the ship!? I wouldn't pay $200 for chairs if I only needed 4... :-( hopefully you can figure something out! GL!

  • Honestly, if I flew 1000 miles or more and had to stand for 25 minutes in the heat and I was al dressed up, plus the 15-20 minutes before I might be a little miffed. You've put all this effort into everything else being so nice for the day and that might be people's first impression for the event. Why not at least check the price of the other vendor? At the very least I would still provide chairs but maybe a lesser amount like 30 or so, so that anyone that wants to sit, can.
  • Our ceremony will be under 15 mins. and we can't have chairs on beaches in Hawaii so our guests will have to stand. But - if I could have paid to have chairs, we would have. I'd much prefer not to make ppl stand, even for a 15 min. ceremony - especially in the heat. I say do it. The difference of $250 is small considering how much we spend on many other things that don't affect our guests' comfort at all.
  • Even though that price is pretty ridiculous, I agree with the two PPs.  Sorry but IMHO you need chairs.  And I really don't like doing VIP chairs only.  The exception being elderly guests.
