Gels vs. Acrylics

Have any of you ladies had an experience with both?  I want to get my nails done before the wedding, and possibly b-pics but not sure which I should get.  My nails are very short and uneven now, so I'll definitely want to do something.  But my experience in the past with acrylics has not been good.  In fact, my nails are so weak that it takes months to get them back to normal afterwards.  Also when I went into the ocean in Maui with them on, they almost...dissolved.  I'm not sure if that's the right word but they def didn't hold up.  So my question to you is...1) Would you recommend one over the other?2) Do gels give you the option of making your nails look longer like acrylis do?3) If I get them done the first time, will getting a fill be possibly just 2 weeks afterwards?TIA

Re: Gels vs. Acrylics

  • The gel nails are stronger but hard to take off though. I only had them for a month and got bored, so I went to my nail salon and they couldn't do anything. The reason being is because it would've torn my real nail off. My real nail wasn't long enough and they said I had to wait a few months to grow them out. If you are going to keep them for a while, I would just go with the gel nails instead.
  • Oh I forgot to say I did have acrylic nails before. I didn't like it because it chips easily.
  • I agree I like gel. I used to do solar but gel is def better. As far as taking them off, I think it depends on your nail salon. My guy never had a problem taking them off. If your nails are kind of weak or won't grow on their own another option is getting gel over your nails, so no plastic extras and the gel will make your nails STRONG!! Almost as strong as he-man ;) Thats my two cents!!! HTH! ooh, and yes you should get a filling after two weeks. grow out is gross!

  • I've had gel nails for over a year now. They are so durable. I work in a jail and they never break. I get them filled every 2 to 3 weeks or so. I use white tips and it's the perfect french manicure look. My nails are much longer than they are naturally. Mine are weak and knock off easy in real life. I love my gel nails.
  • Ooh, I'm so glad to hear.  I'm so rough with my hands that I really need something strong.  Thanks!
  • I usually do silk wraps and have done them on and off for the past 10 years. When I got to FL 3 days before my wedding and needed to get them done, the place my SIL took me to did not do them. They only do gel over an acrylic extension. I was VERY leary, and of course scared, this was 2 days before my wedding. Well, they came out AWESOME. They lasted all through the honeymoon (snorkeling, beach, cuba diving) and when I got home, still looked like they were just done. I was able to go three weeks until my fill, with only one crack. I think I am going to keep them for the winter.
